Beware the River Monsters

The river monsters in question are flathead catfish which can reach up to 120 lbs. They are tightening their chokehold on the waterways of America and have now crossed the border into Canada. Conversationalists have been alarmed at their unstoppable march across the country. Their original habitat is in the Gulf of Mexico basin. It is said that their one of the apex predators, in every system once they establish their populations. These catfish will eat anything they can fit into their mouths. They’re freshwater fish that lay around 10,000 eggs at a time. Scientists think that global warming has contributed to their spread. If their numbers cannot be controlled they’ll eat all the fish that live in rivers. These fish are dreaded by conservationists and fisheries biologists due to their effect on native species. In other words, if you think the shadow beneath the water seems to be a submarine which is strange in a river it is definitely a flathead catfish and there are no other marine animals left there. Thousands are expected to take part in the Okie Noodling Tournament in Pauls Valley Oklahoma next month to try to wrestle these catfish and get the biggest one. This contest is part of a 2001 documentary film.

@Kandae1 so they say that catfish are tasty and many eat them in the southern states. However, with these large catfish they are afraid all the rivers will be emptied of other animal life,

@Kandae11 it seems to be a catch-22 situation. All the catfish you could eat but no other fish or shellfish or anything, SIGH

There are many species that are endangering native wildlife in several parts of the planet. I don´t understand why they aren´t caught and used to feed or clothes us. In my country, people brought boar from Europe and then decided that it wasn´t worth it. So they let them run free. Now they are dangerous but could be a good meat to eat if they were caught. If these catfish can be eaten, they can be used at least in chicken feed.

@RasmaSandra The ocean near my country had many fish fished until they were almost extinct by great ships. And those were fish that were good to eat. They turned it into fish flour for chicken. They should catch these fish that are predrators and turn them into food.

@RasmaSandra that's too bad that they are not really edible. Yes, if so, they could feed many.

@LeaPea2417 Supposedly the small catfish are tasty but the bigger not so tasty, If they were they could feed so many,

We have the same problem here. Some id*ots threw young specimens of those fish in our rivers and now they are growing and becoming invading and they eat the local species.

They really are ugly looking. Didn't know they were causing so much trouble eating all the other fish

@Marilynda1225 that is bad enough if these big ones were good to eat then that would help but they apparently are not tasty

@RasmaSandra even when I watch cooking shows anytime they make catfish it doesn't look appetizing to me. Those big ones certainly are ugly

I wrote about this. It's another case of an "invasive species" ruining the environment.
