The kindness of people

The social committee at our village held a sausage sizzle on Sunday. We had intended to go but then decided it wasn’t a good idea to be in a crowded place when Vince was heading into hospital next day. We told the organisers we wouldn’t be able to go but around midday there was a knock on the door and one of the committee was there with two buns stuffed with sausages, onions and mustard. He also had two drumsticks (frozen dessert thingys) for us. Although we miss our acreage, we do need to be thankful that we have such kind people nearby. I don’t have a photo of the meal but this is the latest jigsaw I’ve just finished. Three hundred pieces and extra-large pieces.

That's wonderful. We should all have neighbors like that but sadly too many people don't even know their neighbors

It certainly made us feel good. It's becoming a good community with plenty of people all willing to help out others.

Kindness comes at the most unexpected times. I'm sure you enjoyed those sausages and dessert that your committee brought to you. How is Vince doing?

@Marilynda1225 I'm just waiting for a phone call now. I have the landline and my mobile both close at hand. I don't intend to miss a call! And yes, I'll keep everyone posted here. I've had such support and kind words from my myLot friends. You have all come to mean a lot to me.

He rang tonight and surgery is 7.15 tomorrow morning. The doctor will ring me when it's all over - probably about 5 hours later but the actual operation won't take that long.

Yeah...I understand that. There was a time in our small apartment, both dad and I were down with Viral. Our neighbor, an elderly lady, (I was young then), she sent meals two days! I miss that kinda life.

That's how people are here. As long as they know you're going through a tough time or they guess, then they're there to help.

I love this puzzle, it must have been challenging doing the straw on the floor. You made a very good decision to move to this community, you seem so very happy, and are obviously very cared about, that should you need a lending hand, I am sure that there would be many to offer.

As it's turned out, it WAS a good decision although I did hate leaving our previous place. Yes, the straw was challenging and so was all the woodwork.

@JudyEv I could sense, at the time, and for a while afterwards, that you were having a difficult time going into town. I hope that you can nurse Vince back to good health, and can enjoy the compromised life of where you live and house sitting for people in the country while they are away. That was such an ideal compromise and must have helped greatly in the adjustment. I hope that there is a puzzle somewhere waiting for Vince to put it together as he recuperates at home.

@Juliaacv Thanks Julia. They say it's a long recovery but it is very worthwhile with good benefits in the end.

I am so glad they thought to bring you some food. You were right not to go, some hospitals refuse to do a surgery if they know the person was in a crowded place the 48 hours before the surgery.

@JudyEv - I think that right now they do not test people, but still they ask to stay home 48 hours before being admitted at the hospital.

I haven't heard of that happening here. The booklet says I have to have proof of vaccinations and a negative covid test taken that day. When I rang to see if it would be done at the facility, they said they don't do that now. If you feel well then you don't need to do a test. I won't be going to any big social events for a good few weeks.

@LadyDuck That makes a lot of sense. I didn't have to have a test or show my vaccination papers but I was asked to wear a mask in the ward till I got to his bedside.

We were really very touched as they had a lot of people to cater for without worrying about us. I've started a new jigsaw but it is mostly shades of blue and grey. I think it is going to be quite difficult.

@JudyEv - Let us know how your husband's surgery goes. I also like having helpful people in our retirement community. I think there are more good people in the world than we realize.

@JudyEv - Yes, we all love the lifestyle we had in the past, and we have fond memories of those days. However, when we age it is much safer and more pleasant to be living in a place that is set up for retired people. I'm glad we live where we do, too.

I need to be more appreciative of what we have here. It's a bit like a big family with some bickers and squabbles but when the chips are down, there is always someone who will hop in and help.
