It's a Push Button Day

In our house we do not waste coffee. It's a rule. Every time we make a pot we make a full pot, and we use it until the pot is gone. Most of the time that still means we are making a fresh pot each day. But if there is some coffee left in the pot the day before, it stays there, the water is poured in and the grounds put into the basket, and when the last cup is gone from the pot, we just push the button and brew a new one. I call that a "push button day." In other words, the program button is not used. But the coffee is prepared and ready to brew even when there is some coffee left in the pot. It's just another way money is saved in the Porwest household.

That's a great way to avoid wasting coffee and save money! Do you have any other money-saving tips or household rules you follow?

Tons and tons. I have been writing about that sort of thing for years around here. If history is any indication, I am sure I will write about it for many more years to come on here. lol

You'd save even more money if you would just quit drinking coffee altogether! Oh, good God, what did I just say? I really need another cup of coffee.

@porwest I fully understand. I must have been having a moment or something when I spoke those words. I blame it on the Florida heat; it's melted my brain.

@porwest I use the coffee grounds for my plants in the garden and I also add to the compost bin. Coffee grounds are great for the plants.

To me it wastes grounds. But I am anal retentive to when it comes to this sort of thing. lol

@LadyDuck I suppose if you are repurposing the grounds to use for something bearing new fruits, that makes even wasted grounds making only two cups of coffee still worth it. lol

Haven't had brewed coffee at home in a long time. Our Breville Barista Express machine stopped working properly so I am drinking instant coffee these days.

I miss having my one cup of decaf in the afternoon. Hubby won't be able to make me a cup for quite some time even when he comes home.

@porwest He needs to be able to climb 3 steps into the house and get in and out of his recliner. They are not concentrating on those things. They mostly have him walk.

@LindaOHio You would think they might have a mock stair thing he could practice on. That would seem useful.

My husband has 1 of them old fashion 1's where there is no buttons on it, he makes it, it perks & he drinks it being I can't stand coffee he drinks almost a pot a day & it's not a small pot it's a 32 cup pot, that A LOT. Back when he was a truck drive over the road I'd make sure I had enough coffee made to take with him when he came home over the weekends & I'd make like 4 pots & freeze it & when I knew he was coming in I'd thaw a gal jug of coffee out & have it waiting for him to take with him, that save me not just $ but a lot of time as well.

It is always good to have a plan. Even coffee out on the road costs way more than anything you will make at home.

My uncle never threw leftover coffee away. He put it in the refrigerator. That didn't allow for the coffee to settle and get stronger. It actually works!

My mother was a coffee drinker. She made coffee in a coffee machine and when there was one cup left she heated that in a small pot on the stove and started up a new batch the next day,

As I always say, it may not save a ton of money, but every penny counts. That's a good way to use some up as well. My wife likes to make an iced coffee occasionally as well and it's perfect when there's some coffee sitting in the pot to do it.

I make mine in a small French press, and drink the one large cup that I make.

@porwest we can't drink the same coffee as each other, so a coffee maker doesn't work. A French Press is no work.

@porwest It sounds like retirement agrees with you and you are still finding ways to save money. Good for you. How are you doing and how is Cal doing? I am not a coffee drinker but like to drink other things and gave up a lot when I went on my weight loss journey.

@porwest I am glad that you are all well and good and I am happy for you because you know how to save and could take early retirement.

Once a saver, always a saver. You don't achieve early retirement without it, and you don't stop doing it when you achieve wealth. In fact, once wealth is achieved, your income is what your money makes, and you set it up so that the only money you spend is money your money earns so that your principal stays put. Other than that, all of us are good and well. Can't complain one bit.

I do not waste my coffee, either. I have a Cuisinart coffee maker that has an insulated carafe, it keeps the coffee nicely for hours as it isn't sitting on a hot base, it's very good literally until the last is drank. Coffee isn't cheap, and I will not waste it. On another note, leftover cold coffee can also be used other ways at times. It makes delicious red-eye gravy with ham! Use the coffee rather than water when baking some items, such as a cake, etc. It's good to put some in when roasting meat, such as a pot roast, etc.

@porwest One of my grandmothers marinated her roasts sometimes in coffee, probably 1-2 cups. Often she would braise the roast a bit with the coffee before baking it. Of course, you can look up recipes to do it that way, but it adds a really good flavor, and I do have to say the gravy itself is just delicious.

That household must have a lot of saving... I used to make a 600 ml bottle of coffee. Then, I keep it in a refrigerator. I only drink 30-50 ml coffee everyday. The coffee will stay in refrigerator about 12 days. I save more time and coffee by doing that.

My mother has a Keurig. I don't drink coffee. I tried it two years ago because I wanted to see if I could drink black coffee. But I couldn't stand it. Anyway my mother is a waster of coffee sometimes. I keep telling her to drink all her coffee, but she won't. I wish it has a setting of less of 6 oz.

When Mom was still alive we used an Oster coffee maker. It had a thermo-carafe with it so we could keep the coffee hot as long as we drank it and didn't need to worry about wasting electricity. I lucked out one day and found a second carafe and we could brew two full pots of coffee and not waste any. The grounds went out among the plants for mulch and also to keep the critters away from them. (waste not want not!!!) If the grounds didn't go around the plants, they went into the mulch pit. There is always a way to save a few pennies!
