They’re funny things, accidents. You never have them till you’re having them.

Dr Michael Mosley was a well-known personality in British media, featuring on TV, podcasts, radio and newspapers as well as writing several popular health-related books. His main focus was on the things people can do to improve their own health and therefore their lives, with the aim of living longer and staying healthy. He was inspired to act because he was afraid of dying relatively young like his father, who died of complications related to diabetes at the age of 74. How ironic then that he should die relatively young at only 67. We were all listeners to his radio series ‘Just One Thing’ (simple things you can do to improve your health and life) so we were shocked to hear he had disappeared on Wednesday afternoon while on holiday with his wife and friends. Apparently he left them on the beach and set off on the short walk back to their accommodation, but never arrived. After an extensive search it was announced this morning that a body has been found on an exposed rocky hillside near the coast. We don’t yet know the details but he set out in the middle of the day in extremely hot temperatures to walk over unforgiving rocky terrain. He was away from the most direct route so it looks as though he may have taken the wrong path and then perhaps been overcome by the heat, or had some sort of accident, but who knows? I guess it just goes to show, you can live a healthy life and then random luck still plays a part. The title is a line by Eeyore in A.A. Milne's book 'Winnie the Pooh'. R.I.P. Dr Michael Mosley, you had a positive effect on many people’s lives.

We both enjoyed his book The Fast Diet and I've been sort of following it for some time. This was a very tragic event and, as you say, ironic that he should die so young.

Me too. I was interested in a lot of the topics he covered - but he actually investigated them and in some cases tried out some of the more extreme ones himself!

@Fleura They've shown snippets of his shows here. In one, he's giving himself a tapeworm. That sounds pretty extreme.

@Fleura As your title says (sort of), accidents are never planned.

I enjoyed his programs and feared the worst for him, when I heard he'd first gone missing

Yep, ya never know until it happens. I thought I was on my way to the thrift store looking for books when I had that major face plant into the pavement...

Something like this could so easily happen to me. I'm not a sitting-on-the-beach type of person, I can just imagine telling my companions I would leave them to it and see them later...

“Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun,” I’m baffled as to why such an eminent doctor, who gives out great advice for living a longer, healthier life, should ignore basic common sense, and go wandering around an unfamiliar place in searing heat? How ironic that he didn’t live as long as his father. Very sad.

@Fleura That’s more than just being silly though. I know it was a high profile story, but how many people has this happened to? As far as I’d read, it’s never happened on this Island. Bad judgment, not just by Michael, but by his wife and whoever else was with him.

I guess everyone does silly things sometimes, and Greek footpaths can be hard to find so it might have been easy to take a wrong turn. Something like that could so easily happen to me. I'm not the kind of person who enjoys sitting on the beach; I can just imagine saying to my companions that they could enjoy sunbathing and I would go and do something else and see them later...

Very sad that his life should have been cut short prematurely. I did not know him as l rarely watch TV but I understand he has done a lot of TV work. Temperatures had reached 40C which is very hot for anyone from the UK. Such a sad way for anyone to die like he did. May he rest in peace.

I don't watch TV either, but I listened to him on Radio 4 and had read a couple of his books. As well as the sad loss, we will never know whether all the little things to improve health and live longer worked for him!

Such a tragic end for someone who dedicated their life to health and well-being. It's a stark reminder of life’s unpredictability. Have you ever experienced something that felt equally unexpected?

Well I had a car accident once, when someone literally drove me off the road. That was certainly unexpected as we were only 5 miles from home after a 170 mile journey. Luckily no-one was injured.

I saw the mayor say he was at the bottom of what looked like a steep hillside? I was glad it didn’t seem more sinister, but deaths so preventable sting awfully bad. I didn’t know who he was, but he certainly sounded like a difference maker.
