Exciting Spotting of Orcas

Since it doesn’t happen often a family fishing at the Point on Cape Hatters was excited to see two orcas leaping out of the water. The killer whales were jumping and seemed to be chasing something. After the orcas arrived the people fishing started to catch bluefish. Orcas are the largest dolphin family members and infrequently visit the Outer Banks in North Carolina. The last pod seen was near Oregon Inlet in March 2011. Orcas can be found in oceans worldwide but are a rare sighting in the North Atlantic. So those of you who like to fish and live nearby grab a rod and see if you can spot some orcas. Photo from online of an orca

I have been to the outer Banks several times and never saw any. It would have been a big thrill to do so I once saw a marlin or tuna some giant fish someone caught though .hanging in the sun.

I wouldn't want to catch an orca on the line, that's for sure!

@JudyEv that orca would drag you down into the depths of the ocean

@RasmaSandra Are they as bad with humans as sharks? I thought Orcas would not interfere with humans unless we interfered with them.

Dolphins related to killer whales?

@Kandae11 yep, that is what the Internet says The orca (Orcinus orca), or killer whale, is a toothed whale that is the largest member of the oceanic dolphin family. It is the only extant species in the genus Orcinus.

They are magnificent creatures. What a sight it must have been for the folks in the eastern part of my state. I enjoyed going to the outer banks.

Wherever the dolphins are swimming, sharks high-tail it out of that area!
