Note to Self: Don't Take On Too Much...

...alternatively titled, 'Sometimes Husband is Right' Since my week off work, I have not done a lot but I have had my first appraisal in my current job. I have also signed up for some more things to do with the reopening of a local venue (I'll refer to that from hereon in as BCH). My appraisal was good. I mean, I am awesome In the year or so that I have been in my current role, I have had three different team leaders. I think the one I have now is to be permanent. Due to the issues with team leaders, we haven't had as many catch-up sessions as we should have. During my appraisal, we talked about lots of things. One was how well I am getting on, mentioning that I am a good role model and that I had had no sick days. We talked about the different directions my career could go and the team leader asked me if there were any projects I'd be interesting in getting involved with. I said for her to ask me about all the things. One of those things was about technical stuff, beta testing systems, etc. Another thing was about coaching as that's something I said I would love to do. I did a bit of it in my old job and, by all accounts, was pretty good at it. I've often been told I would make a good teacher. I don't want to be a teacher, but coaching is different. Training people to do the job I do or to use new technology and processes, that's where it's at for me I did speak to my husband about the appraisal. He knows that I have been thinking about doing another degree. He will support me with that if I can do it (it won't be for at least a year if I do it). He also understood that anything I take on at work will be more of an 'instead' than an 'as well'. I won't be having to juggle loads of things. As mentioned previously, I have started to become involved with BCH. At the moment, it's a lot of red tape and brainstorming. There is a group that set up a charity to take over the building. It is mainly them doing things. Last weekend, I was there with my two sons painting some walls. This weekend was all about signing up for various voluntary roles. My husband had said for me not to take on too much when I told him I wanted to set up a theatre group. I did explain to him that it was important to me and that I would not commit more than a couple of hours. Since then, I have signed up for a number of roles and have offered various other ideas about how the building could be used! As I have said to a few people, I may have limited time but I have a wide range of skills and interests. Rather than it being taking on too much, it's more of an offering of my time but I will do whatever is needed. Following on from the BCH thing, I have found a couple of my old stories that my youngest son has said he would help adapt for stage. Neither of us has ever done such a thing before. Well, it turns out I actually sort of have. One of the stories is in script form. I must have done that as part of my English degree. Actually, I think both stories were for the degree. I had to find one story in my emails because I couldn't find it anywhere else other than on sale! The story is 10 years old. Luckily, I remembered that I had sent it to a friend at the time and still had that email exchange! So that's me, trying really hard not to take on too much but really wanting to do all the things My boys have both been getting involved as well. They each have different skills that they can offer. One has a lot of theatre experience and a qualification in performing arts. He's got a relatively impressive resume for a 19 year old who doesn't like to go anywhere, do anything or interact with people! The other is a maths teacher with specialist skills and qualifications in adolescent mental health. As BCH is going to be a community hub offering, hopefully, a bit of everything including academic courses and mental health sessions, there will (again, hopefully) be plenty of ways he can get involved. We met a lady we knew (well, my sister and I knew her). She asked if my 24 year old son was my boyfriend! She said it was because she could see he was young and I look young. That was nice for me (not so much for my son ) but we had already established that we knew her 30 years ago! Apart from that, I've just been mostly working while counting down the days to my holiday! How have you all been? If you work(ed), do/did you have appraisals? How did you find them (mine in my old job were mostly a waste of time. I'll wait and see if this one is any better). Do you find yourself taking on too much or a project that started off just as a side hustle taking on a life of its own?

I’ve always found appraisals a waste of time. The appraisal scene in The Office sums it up perfectly. Invented by corporations to try and get more out of workers on the promise of promotion or reward, which invariably never happens.

I've never seen The Office so I'm not familiar with the scene. I work for a local authority and, as far as I recall, I've never had any appraisal from any job other than when working for a local authority. That's quite possibly because I never stayed in any other job for long enough You're right about the promise of promotion that never happens. In my old job (a different local authority), I'd talk about the direction I wanted to take with my career, team leader/manager would then go on to decline any requests for me to do things that would actually advance my career. Where I am now, though, I've seen people promoted and can see that there really is opportunity for career progression. I'm not sure I want that any more, though, I'm calculating whether I can retire early

@pumpkinjam I retire early most nights. The Office is brilliant. I’ll find the scene and post on here for your edification.

Whew! You've been busy. You should stop by more often. In my last position before I retired, I stopped getting appraisals. My boss told me she'd let me know if she wasn't happy with me! I was in charge of the Accounting Department and was also the Office Manager. Now that I'm retired, I have a lot of spare time; and I'm loving it. Good luck with your new projects. Have a great week.

I work for a local authority and everyone has to have an annual appraisal. One of the things my team leader asked me to do was talk about how I meet 'our values'. She did agree that is a bit pointless. If I wasn't meeting those, I'd surely have been sacked or, at least, pulled up on it

I am a wife, caregiver and I do online work. I do a lot but know better then to let myself get burned out. I can also stop what I'm doing and hop to another task if I need to.

Burn out is one of the biggest reasons why my husband nags me about taking on too much! In the past, I'd often have too many things I had to do that I didn't do anything I wanted to do. That's different now. Partly because my children are grown up!
