Tragedy averted

July 2024, bus fire, evacuation, on the road

Pictured is our school district's activity bus. It was busy today. Today it took our football players and coaches to a summer football camp about an hour and a half away from our town. As is the protocol, before leaving, the driver gave instructions about emergency preparedness on a school trip, in a school vehicle. "What to do if. . . ." The bus can be replaced, the personal belongings on the bus can be replaced. The people who were in the bus are priceless and irreplaceable, and all escaped without injury. The bus is regularly maintained and serviced, but sometimes things happen. It undergoes a "pre trip" inspection before leaving, but sometimes things happen. And sometimes staff, drivers and students do what they are supposed to do, and they are so grateful afterwards to just be alive. The bus caught fire. At the first sign of smoke it pulled over, and people evacuated. And many people are thankful for the safety of our team.

Oh my goodness. The fire really did a job on that bus. I'm glad everyone got out safely. It could have been so different.

@JudyEv There are other things about the design of buses that have changed since some terrible accidents in the 70's. They now have emergency exit windows and even the ventilating hatches can be popped out for a fast exit. The most rear two seats have one half cut down to prevent people from getting bottlenecked if they have to evacuate.

I used to be a bus driver. We had to practice evacuations, etc. twice a year. We had safety inservices and basically learned how bad bus accidents of any kind can be. This outcome is about the best we can expect.

@GardenGerty Certainly bus accidents can be horrific. Our buses now all have to have seat-belts (but maybe not older ones) but not everyone puts them on.

Wow. That's pretty scary. But also a wake up call to pay attention to safety protocols. So many times we overlook them and don't pay attention to them.

Sometimes we get a "know it all" type attitude and get too bored to pay attention.

Our superintendent posted on Facebook, and I shared to my profile that all activity trips are preceded by safety and evacuation instructions. It looks like the training paid off.
