So, I did a thing Friday before last. I brought home a dozen of new baby chicks!! These ladies are supposed to be all pullets (hens) and one barred rock chick that will go to one of my daughters. She is also getting 3 of the Cinnamon Queens.
I had been trying to get these babies since the beginning of the week, but my schedule didn't match up with the sellers so I had to wait until Friday to get them.
They were two weeks old when I got them and are now 3 weeks old and double the size in the photo. So far they have been good babies and easy to care for.
This breed (for those interested) is a cross between Rhode Island Reds and Silver Laced Wyandotes. What I like about them is that the roosters are all white when hatched and the hens are showing that cinnamon color. Very cool!
I also love the black line that comes out from the side of their eye. It looks like someone has drawn on some eyeliner! Ha!! I'll have to get a picture of this for you all!

I only had one Buff. She was very sweet. A racoon got her though :( Or I'm assuming that is what got her.
I am fixing to set up a new incubator I picked up so that will be another dozen added to the flock. And probably too many! I think the only one left from my original 8 Rhode Island Reds is the mean rooster.

@wolfgirl569 Have you decided what kind you will be getting?

@kareng Poor girl. They are a heavy bird so would not be fast.
I am thinking about 8 to 10 hens and a rooster. Maybe a few ducks too but for sure a couple of guineas.

@LindaOHio I only kept 8 from the dozen I bought. My daughter came and picked up her four today! They are getting big!

I will have more eggs next spring and summer hopefully!
About half of my current flock is older so do not lay daily anymore. I used to have extras and could send them to the flea market weekly, but right now we barely get enough for us to use!

They are so adorable looking at this size.
My parents had pullets in the second level of the barn.
We always had fresh eggs and sold them from the house by word of mouth.
It was alot of work feeding all of the hens, and collecting the eggs, then cleaning them and grading them before packing them.
