The photo of one of our wildflowers has nothing to do with the discussion. I’ve just read that Torvill and Dean are touring Australia next year. Jayne Torvill (1957-) and Christopher Dean (1958-) are British ice-skating champions who set the world alight many years ago. They are celebrating a 50 year partnership – 50 YEARS! I can hardly believe they are still skating and obviously well enough to undertake such a tour. They have also spent time as coaches and choreographers during their careers. Their statistics include 12 perfect sixes and six 5.9s while skating to Bolero at the Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics. This event was watched by more than 24 million viewers in the UK. At the World Championships in 1984, they scored thirteen sixes and five 5.9s. They are coming to Perth next June. Maybe I should start saving for tickets.

I hope that you would be able to go and see them. That is amazing they are still together after 50 years.

They are now in their late 60s so they're doing incredibly well.

I was one of those 24 million, along with my parents. That was in the days when we used to watch TV as a family and everyone watched big events. None of us have watched the Olympics recently. I didn't even watch the London games.

I would normally enjoy the events if I happen to catch them on TV but I forget half the time that they're on.

I have been to a few figure skating shows in Baton Rouge Louisiana to see the ice skating stars from the 1988 Winter Olympics that was sponsored by Tom Collins which was a great show.

Wow, thought they'd retired. I remember the news of their win dominating the UK news

I think there were quite long periods where they judged/taught/whatever rather than doing too much dancing but it doesn't seem as though they ever gave it away completely.

@Ronrybs You would think that some of the 'moves' or whatever must be second-nature to them and require very little thought.

That would be really cool. My mom took me once to see Kristi Yamaguchi and other skaters perform after her gold medal performance, but that wasn’t as much of a challenge as what these two are doing! That is really remarkable.

They’ve just recently “retired” from being judges on Dancing on Ice over here. They were still performing the occasional routine on the show. I remember them doing the Bolero at the 1984 Olympics. It was mesmerising. We’ve not had skaters here in the UK that captured the attention as much as they did since. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the show, even 50 years on, they have stayed fit and able.

I read up about them on Wikipedia. I was interested that Michael Crawford was a mentor and helped with acting and choreography. I didn't mention him in the text as I thought maybe he wasn't known in the US.

I don't suppose we will. The only tickets we could afford would probably be up in the gods and we'd end up just watching the screens.

That's amazing that they have been skating for 50 years. I remember seeing them when they competed in the Olympics. It would be nice if you could see them perform. Have a good day.

Maybe we will but we'd be in the cheaper seats and I wonder how much you'd see. I guess they'd have it showing on screens as well.
