President Obama Calls for Joe Biden to Drop Out

The situation continues to worsen for President Joe Biden as more and more top officials and figureheads in his party call for him to make a reasoned decision and drop out of the race, saying he has no chance to beat Donald Trump in November. The current top list of people calling for Biden to end his campaign are Hakeem Jeffries, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, the latter of whom told the president, "Our party is in peril." And now Obama has told aides publicly that, "The president needs to reconsider his viability." It has been suggested and widely predicted that President Joe Biden may drop out of the race as early as this weekend. If that happens, Kamala Harris rises to the top of the ticket as she controls the campaign funds. She could also step aside and allow another candidate to emerge. But that will be something we'd have to wait and see what happens. Because the delegates belong to Joe Biden, the decision, heedless of the pressure on him to quit, remains his decision alone to make.

They are saying this stuff privately. The highest-profile Democrat I've seen call for Biden to drop out is Congressman Adam Schiff. That being said Schiff is very close to Pelosi so I can't imagine that he would have spoken out without her approval. Also notable--none of them (Jeffries, Pelosi, Schumer, Obama) have publicly encouraged him to stay in or offered their own opinion publicly. I suspect he will drop out over the weekend and Kamala will be the nominee. I like a Harris/Buttigieg ticket. I like Biden as you know but even I have seen how disastrous this past month has been for him. COVID certainly isn't helping.

@porwest What do you think will happen, will Kamala be the nominee and if so, could she beat Trump? I think if that happens, the only way she wins is through Democrat cheating to the max.

@porwest I'm not clutching at straws. Show me a link to any article, video, etc. where Pelosi, Jeffries, Schumer, or Obama have publicly said that **on record**. I'm not saying that they aren't saying it behind the scenes but none of them have officially said it on the record. Several reports I've seen have said that Harris polls better than Biden. . . but still not better than Trump.

You seem to be wanting to clutch at straws. This is ALL OVER the news. Every single network is calling each of these people out directly by name, all of it has been verified and second checked. Joe Scarborough has talked about it on Morning Joe. It's everywhere. It has even been strongly suggested that Obama was consulted with by George Clooney before he wrote his letter suggesting Biden should drop out, and Obama gave him the go ahead even if he had not publicly, before now, stated his position. As for what happens if Biden steps down, as I have said before, I doubt it matters. The race is over. Harris' numbers are worse than Biden's, and Harris polls lower than any other names that have been thrown out there. The policies have not worked. The American people don't believe they are working. That's why his approval ratings are at 36%. Why would the Democrats not understand it's not just a Joe Biden problem, it's a party problem? The American people widely disapprove of the job they've done. No matter who they put in front, if the same policies are what can be expected, they lose.

I fear his pride might keep him going. He knows he's not well and his health continues to decline, but male ego won't allow him to do the right thing. I'll be surprised if he does. But, I fear he'd have to drop for that to happen.

@porwest For his health and safety I hope he's smart enough to realize that.

@kaylachan I think it has been made more than clear he is not thinking clearly at all about this.

There does come a time when you have to do what's right for the people you represent and your party. Although circumstances are quite different, even Nixon knew when the time came to step down. He had lost all support of his party, they told him that, and he stepped down.

He already did. I think he has been shadow running the show since day one. But it's just a guess.

@porwest Seems to me that he’s hung on too long to be able to make a graceful, dignified exit.

He is definitely impacting his ultimate legacy. There comes a time when one has to make the right decision for the good of the people and your party. If the entire Democrat establishment is telling him he can't win and Biden TRULY believes the garbage he is putting out there that Trump is the greatest threat to the nation it has ever known... What does that say about Biden's TRUE convictions regarding that pitch? If his mere staying in the race guarantees Trump wins and that threat comes to life, why WOULDN'T you step down? I think it is safe to assume I am NOT the smartest guy in the room, and therefore, I'm not the only person on the planet asking this question.

I heard about this from Megan Kelly yesterday.

What the Democrats are missing is that it's not just Biden who is at issue here. It's their POLICIES. You can't have a 36% approval rating and walk away with the idea that people are supporting what you are doing and what your vision is. So, the problem is, even if they put someone else on the ticket, if what they will espouse are the same failed policies people have already decided they don't like, what's to make them support you one way or the other.?

@2ndchances24 Of course they won't change anything. A few things are the issue here. They THINK their policies work even when it is clear they don't. They think the American people are stupid, or at least that their base will buy their lies and fantasies. And they really don't care what the American people think or want. They want their power. It is all that matters to them.

It's getting VERY interesting. I have never seen a party in this much disarray since Nixon. There is NO WAY any Democrat can win no matter what decision they make at this point.

It will be interesting to see what happens this weekend. The nation will be watching closely to see what happens over the next couple of days.

@porwest It is definitely going to be interesting to see how this story plays out. I wonder if they keep thinking he can rebound by giving a good speech or something? It sure is a gamble though. Can you imagine what it's going to be like with him accepting the nomination at the DNC? His speech will probably be a rambling mess.

@moffittjc I explored that idea. Of course, now we don't have to see THAT convention with Biden dropping out and Harris taking the reins. She's a worse disaster for other reasons than Biden is. I am starting to tire of this roller coaster, though.

Turns out Biden's camp made it clear Biden's not dropping out before the weekend. But of course, this story is far from over. It's a wait and see game now. Who knows anymore?
