I know many of you go to thrift stores, resale shops or charity stores just like I do. Just like I did today. The one closest to me is run by the hospital auxiliary. I have noticed over time that kids tend to come along with parents or grandparents to help. I have seen them straighten stock, and have seen a young man get taught the proper way to use a large push mop. Today a "going into third grader" ran the cash register for my transaction. How great it is. These kids are being taught charity or benevolence, and how to work, too. I am highly impressed.

We have a great thrift store not far from me that is one of the best I have ever been to. It's been there for years, spotlessly clean and well run, with a lot of volunteers to help. Sponsored by churches, often the youth can be seen helping on a Saturday or after school for a little while. Very low prices and they sell nice things. They also help homeless, people burned out of their homes, and various other projects with the money they take in. They have a metal stand/box-like station by their front door area, nice and neat, loaded with non-perishable food for anyone that needs it. Plus you can leave food items in it if you have extra. They truly run a business/service to be proud of.

@GardenGerty It’s truly wonderful, they have helped so many. If I have an item I no longer have use for, it goes to their store.

@kareng Other "stores" probably can not get away with it. I believe for some things they can hire at 15. We do have a sno cone concession run by a family here in town. The oldest brother took over management this summer. My friend Zogie has a ten year old he pays to help out for an hour here and there because he knows the mom.

That is good. I saw a 5 year old driving a golf cart today..of course dad or grandpa was sitting right beside him. I think I would keep my 5 year old in the driveway if he or she wanted to drive the golf cart though. They don't belong on the roads of the community.

No they don't, but many drive farm trucks at that age.

@snowy22315 I would not be able to do the trailer and backing. I donot want to badly enough to learn. Some of our farm kids are pretty tall. Also sometimes it is just a small pickup, but my friends have always put their kids to driving. Not on the road, though.

@GardenGerty at 5?? How could they even reach the pedals? I did see a 12 year expertly manage backing a truck with a trailer on it to take a boat out of the water. That was kind of amazing..lot of adults couldn't do that.

That's good to see without someone screming child labor.

I did not think of that. I thought of how some people might think a child could not serve them correctly.

@kaylachan Well the work is not dangerous, and they have a parent or grandparent supervising. I was actually charmed with this little kid. Told him I would see him around school.

@GardenGerty We have so many people in this world ready to shout child abuse over the tiniest of things. I'm glad there are some places in this world that are willing to allow small children learn pratical life skills.

It's great. Children learn through imitation of adults and doing it themselves. It's great that they are doing it from young age. Good things taught and lived at young age last a lifetime.

I hope they know kids can't be in the work force till they are of age & that is illegal, they can teach kids that stuff at home so they don't get into trouble with the law, as well as in school,

Well school is out, it was a Saturday anyway. Yes, there are child labor laws, but none of these children are exposed to anything dangerous, and are not being paid. It is more like having your kid run a lemonade stand or help at a home yard sale. Not even as hard as selling Girl Scout Cookies.

@2ndchances24 And how to help others. When my son was pretty young, if I would go to the fabric counter at Wal Mart he would find all the dropped or fallen pins and pick them up for the lady cutting fabric. He liked to do it.

That's a really good idea. Years ago, very young children had quite responsible chores to do on farms and in households. Some kids nowadays know very few 'living' skills.

I have seen kids "help" their grandma here, and then she will buy them something. It makes learning fun and teaches work/life skills.

Seems like a good "mission." I like thrift stores since I can usually find interesting things and it's like a yard sale of sorts. I like to check out the junk aisles, as I call them. When it comes to clothes I mainly buy shirts and pants. Not much else in the clothes interest me.

@GardenGerty When I wore more button down shirts, I'd get them there. But I mostly wear tee shirts and the used ones usually aren't very good.

That is definitely impressive. Young kids being taught about the value of things and money is something that should continue. Great values taught from childhood have a lasting impact on children . Perhaps , this is something we should pass onto other societies across the globe as well. Thanks for sharing this!
