Memories about drinking tea

My last post was about a barista’s guide to mental health. One of his suggestions was ‘stay calm and drink coffee’. @Ronrybs said his would be ‘stay calm and drink tea’ which brought back a few memories for me. Growing up on a farm, we only drank tea. Sometimes, if we had guests, Mum would make ‘coffee’ with coffee and chicory essence but otherwise it was tea. Tea-bags hadn’t been invented at that time. Dad drank black tea because, when he was living in a tent and clearing his land, milk wasn’t available. In our own home, he would pour his tea into his saucer to cool it and drink from the saucer. While quite small, I would go to where he was seated and take a few sips from his saucer which is how I learnt to have black tea too. The photo shows some knick-knacks including a miniature tea-set and a teapot.

I love drinking both coffee and tea. I do prefer coffee more, but I can't say no to good masala tea or kulhad tea.

@SaraChristine, Hey, it's great to hear "masala" tea from you. I mean, I thought there might be some different word for this Indian-origin word. But I was a bit surprised and amused at the same time. So which masala tea do you drink? Is there any favorite brand in masalas? Or is it anything homemade? I am curious to know because, the masala here, we can get from shops, as well as we can make it at home.

I only like regular tea and instant coffee. I'm not very sophisticated in my tastes.

@JudyEv On daily basis I also have instant coffee, which I make for myself at home. We don't kulhad tea at home because of its process at home we consume normal tea and on special time masala tea.

While I am not a very "Diehard" tea lover, I have two fups if Tea per day. Sometimes more, but that can cause acidity. It's more of a "Chai" with Sugar and Milk added. Drinking in saucer was the norm earlier in India. Now it's not much. I think we got to drink more of Milk Tea courtesy our Colonial Lords, The Stiff Upper Lip Britishers!! Though now I think how many in Britain would be carrying the proverbial "Stiff Upper Lip" !! Have a nice Wednesday ahead !

@JudyEv Jaggery is a by product of Sugarcane processing and is considered a healthier sweetening alternative to Sugar; especially the refined sugar.

@judyev Ah, tea. Now there’s a drink. My grandfather did that thing with the saucer. And it really needs to be without milk.

Vince started drinking black tea when his landlady would put powdered milk in the tea and the lumps weren't fully dissolved.

@JudyEv That’s why I started too! In Malawi as a child we had only powdered milk.

That's a gorgeous tea set in the picture. Is that yours? I started drinking tea much late in my life, some seven years back. It started with giving company to my husband. But I can't take black tea. For me, it's milk tea with ginger or cardamom in it. I don't put sugar or any sweetener there.

These items were all my mother's but I've passed them on to the son in Ireland. In Nepal, I had tea with ginger and honey. It was really refreshing.

@arunima25 I carried on drinking it for quite a while when we came home. I forgot - it also had lemon in it which was good for colds too.

@JudyEv They are gorgeous and precious! I hope that your son takes good care of them. Tea with ginger and honey is quite common here. It's good for boosting immunity and is a very effective home remedy for cold.

My Grandfather used to drink tea, and tea only. We used to refer to it as his sticky tea as he preferred so much sugar in it. I do like the tea pot pictured here, it is much more sturdy than the dainty little ones that I have.

Coffee became fashionable when I was in my late teens. It became the beverage to have if you wanted to be 'cool'.

I used to drink herbal tea every night with a toasted bagel. My husband has a million different teas in the cupboard but he hardly ever drinks any. Have a good day.
