7/23/24 - Update on My Husband

Got a call from the rehab facility that my husband had fallen. She said that he hit his head on a cabinet and hurt his back. I tried to call; but there was no answer at the nurse's station. When my husband called last night, he told me that he just slipped out of the wheelchair and didn't hurt himself.
I called 6 times yesterday trying to get a hold of someone who handles the medical records. I left messages for two people but, of course, no one called me back. One of them was my favorite social worker. Time is running out for me to get the records to the judge by July 29. I'll try again today.
The PT guy told my husband that he should be going home soon. This is great news. My husband did the stairs very well and, except for him slipping out of his wheelchair, he has been getting in and out of the wheelchair and bed by himself.
Thank you for your continued support, prayers and thoughts.

That is great..well not the slipping part. I really think you would feel alot more comfortable having him home with a health aide there available to help. It would be one thing if you were in better health yourself, but you would be unlikely able to help him if he did fall or who knows what?

@snowy22315 Found that I have a 3-page list of Home Health Aide agencies....however, am thinking about hiring my husband's 2nd cousin who was a nurse for 20 years.

@LindaOHio It seems so. One good fall and I fear they say, "Nope, he's gotta stay." Hopefully that doesn't happen.

The sooner he leaves that place the sooner he'll get back to 'normal'.

Yes, he can gain back some of the weight he's lost.

I said that when my husband called he said he only slipped out of his wheelchair and wasn't hurt. I don't know why they said that he hit his head and hurt his back.

Clearly they are not going to 'discharge' him if they are giving you one story and he is giving you another.
I hope that you can get to the bottom of this one and that he becomes more steady on his feet so that he can safely come home. There would be nothing worse than returning home only to fall and have to return to that facility again.

@LindaOHio No, I couldn't imagine that either.
I hope that you can both communicate (privately) about his strengths and progress and then make your plans.

The falling is scary. Hope he’ll use a walker or a scooter to keep his balance.

@FourWalls It's a long process to get a piece of durable equipment. We may only have a week until he comes home.

When he hit his head, did it leave a mark? Was it a painful hit on the head?

He said that he didn't hit his head or his back. He just slid out of his wheelchair.

Weird that you were told he fell and hurt his back but he says he isn’t hurt. I hope you can get there today, get the medical records you need, and find out what really happened for sure. It’s great that he may be released soon, but I know when he gets to go home, if he fell you can’t get him up, and he probably would have trouble getting up off the floor.

He said he could have gotten up by himself....but he shouldn't be falling at all at this point.

At 82, falling can so easily result in broken bones, and they take a long time to heal. Yes, it’s a big concern.

That sounds weird. Hope you can find out if he has really hit his head and hurt his back.

That's great news to hear he'll be coming home soon
but it's not good news to hear he slipped & you can't get
ahold of any 1 when you need to, even though they're busy
I think there should ALWAYS be some 1 there to answer
the phone, my husband had the same thing happen to him
while I was in the hosp & knowing it was a 2 hr drive to the
hosp, was very annoying when he couldn't get ahold of any 1.

@LindaOHio OH believe me I know, My husband was having a
heck of a time trying to get a hold of them, it didn't matter at
what time either, but when it come to THEM getting ahold of
HIM they called the law (wellness check) it was crazy.

Why did they say that your husband hit his head on a cabinet and hurt his back when he says otherwise?
