Did You Know This About Your Social Security?

I just read an article stating that you can retire abroad and still receive your Social Security. There are no time restrictions for receiving your benefits abroad. That is as long as you qualify and that your proof of life documents are submitted annually. You will also be required to fill out Form SSA-7162 which is a two-page form asking about any changes to residency and marital status. You would be getting this form about every 1 to 2 years. There are only a few countries where you would not be able to get Social Security. Those are Azerbaijan, Belarus, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, North Korea, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Yes I did actually know that. My dream is to retire at 55 and move to Cozumel, Mexico.

No, I didn't know that, but I'm not surprised you can get it if you live abroad.

I have often read of people retiring cheaply overseas on their social security.

In many places a person could live rather cheaply too.

What you found is true. In fact, many find it better to retire abroad especially in countries where medical facilities are better and optimum. This gives us the best benefits for what we get from social security . I was not aware that there are certain countries where the social security cannot be received. Most of the countries are part of former USSR apart from North Korea and Cuba. Thanks for sharing this valuable information!

I know. It's nice to have the option and just for the reasons you have mentioned. You're welcome.

A friend's son is going to retire to Japan. I wonder where I could move to live better than the US on my social security and pension.
