So, WHAT'S the Penalty?

Sometimes you really have to wonder. For example, we were tooling around in Collinsville and Edwardsville yesterday a bit and stopped at a Dollar General store for no particular reason other than to just have a look around. On display were 1-ounce bags of Frito-Lay chips with a sign attached that read, "2 for $1. Must buy two to receive the discount or $0.50 each." Did anyone catch it? The question is, what's the penalty then if I only buy one? If I buy 2 I get the discount but if I only buy one, I pay exactly half the total of two bags at the discounted price? I wonder if this applies to that never not funny meme that goes around quite a lot? "You had one job."

Now it says 2 for $1 plus tax. The 50 cent each doesn't say plus tax. Does that mean there is no tax if you buy one? I bet people won't pay attention and think they are saving money. I wonder if the store manager is aware of this typo. Unless it is not a typo.

@porwest I bet people just look at 2 for $1 and don't even pay attention to what's written underneath.

@lovebuglena Exactly, and it is exactly what they were hoping for when they made this sign.

Like I have said to others, I think they did this on purpose knowing that no one, or few, will look past "you have to buy two," and therefore, they'll bamboozle many people out of their money, forcing them to buy two even if the price of one is the SAME. lol

Someone who doesn't "think" will not hesitate grab 2 . The tricky wording is great for sales - more of those chips will go out the door faster. Oh, but there's no fooling folks like us .

Did it say how much it was for one bag?

Didn't you read the sign? It said one bag would be 50 cents. lol Which is why I found the sign...interesting. It completely contradicted itself.

@porwest I don't see where it says one bag costs 50 cents. It seems to say you must buy two to get that price.

It seems you are EXACTLY the person this sign was intended to trick. It's right there SQAURE IN YOUR FACE and you can't see it!

I am thinking that's probably why they did it. Most people would only see "must buy two," and not read further, and just stick two bags in their cart.

@TheHorse This is Dollar General. They have various prices on everything they sell. It's not the Dollar Tree where everything is $1.25. And even they sell things for less than a buck.

Just goes to show two things here. People are easily duped, and how many eyeballs saw this without realizing the error? lol How many people would buy two not realizing they COULD actually buy one and the price of the single bag would be the same each as the price of two? lol I am ACTUALLY inclined to believe most people are idiots, THEY know this, and so...joke's on the consumer and the error was intentional.

@porwest I have only been to a dollar store once. That was enough.

@NJChicaa You don't have to run into a dollar store to find signs like this, NOR is it necessary to encounter idiots. lol

The problem is, how many people are not good at math and how many people will buy two thinking they'll actually pay more if they only buy one? lol

Stores use all kinds of gimmicks to get you to pay more, including buying the bigger box of something, thinking that it's cheaper per ounce...but it's not. You have to be savvy these days to make your dollars go further. Have a good week.

You are right about that. You have to pay very close attention these days. Scams and cheats are everywhere, and you have to be smarter than they are.
