7/30/24 - Update On My Husband

Our housekeeper came over yesterday to do the trash, etc. and to start getting the house ready for my husband's return. When I spoke to my husband last night, even though we had a LONG conversation about the fact that he can leave whenever he wants, he said that he didn't remember that conversation and didn't know he could leave whenever he wants to. He dropped a bomb when I asked him how he felt right now. Was he ready to come home in a week as he said? He said he would like to gain more strength before coming home. I hope he's not waiting for someone to tell him he can go home or I hope he's not afraid to take the leap after being away for 6 months. I called the judge's team and was given an extension for getting the physical therapy records in to them. I have until August 2. I will call Nancy in Medical Records this morning to see if they are ready. We can send them Priority Express again with 1-day delivery. My husband's 2nd cousin went to the facility to start packing up the clothes, etc. that he's not using. Hopefully, when he is ready to come home, we will only have to make one trip to the car. Thank you for your continued support, prayers and thoughts. Photo Credit: Pixabay

He must be very much afraid after all this time in a hospital. You will have to be very patient with him.

@LindaOHio His world has been the hospital for too long. It will take time for him to get used to home again and you too will need adjustmentts.

Yes, he's been gone for 6 months and home is probably foreign to him now.

At the same time, I understand his feelings. I guess at the end of the day, he has to be the one most comfortable with the idea of returning home. Hopefully he can make that determination sooner rather than later. I can't imagine preferring to be in a place like that over being at home. But I do understand wanting to feel safe.

Yes. For 2 weeks. Then it's $40 per session and he must go to the PT location about 6 miles from us.

He may feel he just isn’t strong enough to be at home. He has been very sick for a long time, he’s lived in that same body for over eight decades, and he more than likely is concerned about whether or not he can do what’s expected of him. He does need to feel fully comfortable about the situation for it to work. Would he feel better to have the doctor come and discuss it with him? I think if it were me, I definitely would. If he does think he needs to be stronger, the doctor could possibly have some ideas for that, too.

@MarieCoyle We have a shower chair and the higher toilets. I am getting a grab bar installed unless my husband has a problem with it. The shower is very small; but I thought I could have it installed towards the front in a vertical position which won't be in the way.

I don't know what I will do at this point except to have a safety bar installed in the shower. The shower is really small; so it might have to be installed in the front and vertically.

@LindaOHio Not to bring up another possible need, but it is true that most accidents people have at home (at least people who are not totally mobile) are in the bathroom. So any safety features will help him, I'm sure. My aunt's doctor really stressed grab/safety bars as well as a shower chair, and a raised toilet seat(which is easy to change back when not needed). But you have probably thought of all of those things already.

He might be a little nervous about coming back home. Maybe you can show him the pictures of the steps, etc.

He is probably institutionalized from being in a facility for so long. Going home is now foreign to him. I'd kind of like to surprise him with the steps and handrails. They are so nicely done.

It sounds like he may be afraid to come home. I guess he has gotten institutionalized to a certain extent, or maybe he fears another medical emergency there

@LindaOHio Yeah, he is nervous about it. That is part of the reason it would be good for him to do a home visit.

@snowy22315 Do you mean for him to come home for a visit before he leaves the facility for good? I don't think he'd go along with that; but thanks for the suggestion. I will check with him.

After being gone for so long, it's understandable he might be a little scared. In rehab, despite the food and wait times, he has people who wait on him and can help him. He'll be coming home to something very unfamiliar, which can be scarry.

@LindaOHio It's completely understandable. Most people also don't understand their rights, either. You can't be forced to stay in a place against your will. He could've gone home at any time. But, it had to be his decision more or less. He also knows you expect him to be able to do so much on his own before he can come home. I think you two need to have a long fece-to-face talk about this.

i also don't like when we are kind of depending of other people's opinion, people like doctors who are experts but aren't realistic or don't care enough. i really hope records will be there until august 2. hold on.
