I think that yeah, maybe big people shouldn't belly dance. Too much is dancin that's not supposed to be. On the other hand, I do hula. And I think that anyone of ANY size can hula. I've known some big girls to hula, (impromptu in the middle of an event while the band is playing) and the crowd will hoot and holler because it comes from the heart and in that case it's always a beautiful thing. Hmmm... maybe I feel that way because it's my culture. Maybe middle easterns feel the same way about their belly dance? Aloha!

Well there's no point if you haven't got a belly! I do it and I'm not skinny - you've got to have a good sized butt as well. I've seen skinny people do it in class and it doesn't really look right - not enough to shake!

Well, I think that anyone that wants to do it should go ahead. But, I think that an audience would rather see a skinny person belly dance instead of a fat person. Sad but true.

Belly dancing is something I've always wanted to try. I do have the body for it, but I could always be more in shape, as I don't exercise on a regular basis. I have a neighbor that took belly dancing classes with her friends and she loved it. She said that it's a lot harder than it looks and that it's really fun. Taking belly dancing classes is one of my "things to do in my lifetime" list items. Good question. +

Stop Waiting! Its great exercise, so don't worry about not being in 'great shape' to begin with - you'll get there. The hardest part is learning not to move your Whole Body at one time - there are a lot of 'isolations'. Once you learn that, which only comes with practice, you'll do fine!

seems like a good way to tighten your stomach muscles so i don't see y any person of any size couldn't benefit. i wouldn't mind taking those classes.

In my own opinion I would say if someone feels comfortable and sexy doing it go for it doesn't matter what size they are..and your man will probably love it no matter your size...

I really feel that any woman can do as they please. Belly dancing is very good for exercising though. But it's extremely fun, but even this question makes it seem as if it's one or the other. But I think we all know that any woman can belly dance if their heart is into it. But maybe it's because I am not very judgmental towards big or skinny girls dancing...

I think you should have a nice body if you are going to belly dance. I don't want to see someone wigglying their fat around.

best to stay out of the ethnic restaurants then - no airbrush divas in those places - they have real women dancing.

It's for anyone who wants to do it.Whether they are fat or skinny it's up to that person and if they feel that they can belly dance then more power to them.

Belly Dancing is not weight discrimitory! Anyone can do it no matter how much they weigh or don't weigh. It doesn't matter how old you are or how young either. My mother, my Bestfriend ,and I have all taken classes together. In that class there were people of various sizes. It's great for exercise and it leaves you feeling great with a better positive self image.
