Another one as obvious as the nose on Jimmy Durante’s face. (I’ll leave it for you kids to look up Durante and his schnoz.) There are some songs that were safe bets for this monthlong look at songs celebrating rock and roll in their titles, and this is definitely one of them. Sing along once again! Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley and His Comets And yes, I know the real title is “(We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock,” but I didn’t feel like updating the database this morning. This song, age-wise, is seventy years old now. In terms of music, it’s timeless. From its use in Blackboard Jungle to the theme to Happy Days, it’s one of the defining songs of the advent of what we now call rock and roll. Rock Around the Clock Written by Max Freedman and Jimmy DeKnight Recorded by Bill Haley and His Comets Released as a single, 1954 We’ll be right in seventh heaven:

I remember the first time I heard it as if it was yesterday. I went with my parents to a wedding. I was 11 years old and knew nothing about music. When the dancing began, the older girls (probably from 15 to 17) put this music and started to dance. I was elated.

You know too many of these. I’ll have to put something obscure in here.

This was a popular song here. We even have a Cantonese version sung by a local popular singer.

One of those happy, innocent early days of rock and roll songs. Cheerful is so accurate!

Before I was born, but it’s a hard song to miss, especially with all the 50s revival things that were going on in the 70s and early 80s.
