When the sun rolls down Croagh Patrick

Our younger son lives in Co. Mayo, Ireland and turns 50 on August 24. This is a significant date in his area as it is one of two days when the ‘sun rolls down Croagh Patrick’. This pyramid-mountain dominates the Boheh Rock, creates it own weather system and is often cloud-covered. The sun sets over Croagh Patrick every evening of course but twice a year, on 18 April and 24 August, the sun appears to roll down the western edge of the north face of the mountain; the passage of the sun following the inclination of the mountain. The two dates when this occurs, together with the winter solstice, divides the year into three more or less equal parts, and may correspond to sowing and reaping cycles. You can watch a time lapse video via the link. No wonder ancient civilisations were in awe of some of these phenomena. The photo is of a West Australian sunset.
The 'Rolling Sun' Spectacle of Boheh, where the sun appears to roll down the side of Croagh Patrick when viewed from the Boheh Stone, in more modern times called St Patrick's Chair, close to Westport in County Mayo.

@RebeccasFarm He says he will come next year so that would be good. As we get older such a long trip becomes a real ordeal and also travel insurance becomes very expensive.

I can grieve with you - as I doubt we'll ever go back there now either.

That is a very nice picture. That is the sort of thing I'd like to paint. Did you take that photograph? That sounds very beautiful.

@sharonelton It's hard to believe it really happens. It looks like a photoshop type of thing.

@JudyEv You're welcome. They probably prayed to the sun god when they saw it.

Yes, they do but I don't know how many. I'll ask my son after the event. It seems such a special thing that I'd have thought would flock to see it but apparently it's often covered in cloud.

Quite an interesting concept and equally important observation. The picture is really nice to look at !! The linkage to ancient civilizations is also vital.

@judyev We have often holidayed in the village of Murrisk at the foot of Croagh Patrick but not on those dates. One minute the mountain is invisible in dense clouds and you wouldn’t know there was anything there. A minute later and the cloud vanishes.

We joke with people that Cradle Mountain in Tasmania is a myth. We certainly didn't see any of it when we were there. It was covered in fog. lol
