Feet on the Kitchen Table

I don't recall my parents ever teaching me this, but I know not to put my feet on the kitchen table. Besides it being bad manners, it's just gross. One year, we went to Thanksgiving at my sister in law's house. After the table was cleared and everyone was just resting, my SIL and mother in law were talking at the table. They were situated facing each other, but SIL had one foot raised on the table . . . my MIL must've been chatting directly to the bottom of SIL's foot . I thought it was rather disrespectful, but MIL didn't say anything. What do you think of feet on the kitchen table?

It’s gross, rude, and I’ve never seen it happen in front of me. I’d be tempted to tell the person they are not in a barn. Your poor MIL was very nice not to swat her foot off the table.

If I did that, I know my parents would let me have it. Even my own kids wouldn't do it. I have a feeling that MIL often did not correct her kids, but SIL was very much grown and should have known better. It was awkward to witness that from the angle where I was.

I think that's terrible. It's unsanitary and rude. Have a good day.

@LindaOHio Since MIL never said anything, I do have to wonder if SIL did this since childhood and her parents never corrected her. You'd think a grown person would know this was wrong!

In a movie this weekend, I saw a girl do this. It reminded me of what SIL did. You would think most people would know NOT to do that.

It is gross. I think common sense tells us to keep our feet off the table. SIL sounds like he was relaxed and feeling lazy.

@much2say .......Some people don't seem to have any common sense. She can think all she wants but the truth is what you see before you.

I would think that would be common sense too, but as we know, some people just don't get it. She puts herself in the beautiful elite class, but stuff like this shows me how "unrefined" she really is.

I could not believe a grown woman was doing this - and right in front of her mother. I couldn't believe my MIL didn't correct her either!

Gross indeed! I just could not believe my MIL said absolutely nothing . . . I know my parents would be quick to let me have it. But perhaps that's a telling story of why my SIL sometimes has no manners.

@much2say I would have to agree that manners are taught as children so if an adult has no manners I guess it's safe to point the finger at the parents. I still can't believe your MIL didn't think anything wrong with your SIL putting her feet on the table.

My sister is law considers herself to be someone of high society. . . but when I witness manners like this, I do have to wonder. I could not help but think how rude that was to her own mother . . . but why did her mother not correct her?

It wouldn't happen here. We were taught that here. I don't often see anyone with their feet on the table but I think it looks disrespectful too.

Feet on that matter, on any table is unacceptable. It is more than just bad manners. Feet on kitchen table is totally unacceptable. I too do not recollect , being taught of not keeping feet on table. However, usually we use to keep things on table especially books and food. So table is something sacred in that respect. Again, talking to someone with a feet raised is something I would be comfortable. Perhaps your mother in law knew something about your sister in law .Perhaps about her feet or about her lack of knowledge on such things.

Sacred - yes! This reminds me of a tv show where a chef won a contest and he jumped on his cutting board - with his shoes on too - I thought that was a complete no-no. Disrespectful and disgusting. I agree the kitchen table should be kept as a sacred place/furniture in which to be kept clean as we eat on it. We do the same with books and such, but never feet - and certainly never feet facing our parents' face! My MIL tends to hesitate speaking up to this particular daughter . . . perhaps my SIL was not corrected about many manners.
