We missed an opportunity

Some time back, we got together with Vince’s younger brother and hammered four railway ‘dogs’ into a length of timber. It’s now on the wall outside his back door and holds hats and coats. At the tourist bureau in our home town of Narrogin, there was a similar gadget for sale but it was only about half as long. They wanted $90 for it which I thought was a bit excessive as it was only about 18" long. I wish now we’d made more while we had the right tools. We could have made a small fortune. The photo shows one of the hangers that we had in the shed at Donnybrook.

“Retro” or “rustic” decor is very popular here right now. I’m glad because all of my furniture is old, so it looks chic.

There was a time when 'shabby chic' was very fashionable. We always called it 'shabby sh*t'. But it was a bit different to rustic or just plain old.

I think all of us have missed out on those types of opportunities. Hindsight as they say. That is a good looking hanger though, I would have bought one. lol

@BelleStarr It was a bit of a shock to see the price. Some guys from the Mens Shed made them so it wasn't as if they were trying to make a living from them.

So good to see your name here again. I hope you hang around for a while this time. I forgot I had a photo of the expensive one but I'll add it here.

It seems that when you lived in the country you had more ways to make the things you needed, now that you're in the city and no longer have all those tools you'll have to buy the things you need, Ahhh, hindsight

That's so true. Luckily Vince's brother has a large block and has quite a few bits and pieces that he is happy for us to rummage through his rubbish if we want something. We got two lengths of timber from him today which we'll need to hang up my vertical garden.

Country living is so much better than city except when a person needs to be close to medical care, country communities rarely have medical services close at hand.

I remember seeing this before. I'm sure the uniqueness of the item would have given you a fair price if you had made them to sell. Making them for friends and family is an even better price and gives more joy.

That's very true. I only have a few of the spikes left now but if we make any more they will be for friends.

I love the fact that you can use timber and pegs that are otherwise worthless.

We had several at our old place. A couple just had four or five spikes.

That is really lovely and could be used as is or painted up and used to hang stockings from for Christmas. That was my initial thought when I looked at the photo, maybe I have Christmas on my mind. Do they have a club where Vince can do such work at the clubhouse at all?

There are Men's Sheds in the area where he would be able to do such work. It's not a bad idea actually.

I might try to pick up some more railway dogs one day. Maybe Vince could go to a Men's Shed to make some more.

These handy gadgets are needed in homes. You had the materials, tools, and expertise earlier - maybe only the material is lacking now.

There is still time. All the supplies would be is a small investment for a nice return. I am sure you could sell them. Even at half the price you'd make a killing, I am sure.

We made several quite long ones for our house and a couple of smaller ones. We could easily have sold a few if we'd thought of it.
