I am Full of Holes

My bone density scan came back. The doctor said some bones are full of holes. So I am a holey person. It is scary. She says I need Vitamin D and calcium among other things. What do you know about osteoporosis? How do you keep from falling and breaking something? Do you know anyone with it? What do you or they do about it?

@Shivram59 Mostly older women get stuff like this. Some younger women also.

Vitamina D is fundamental but also strength training, train with weights (1 or 2 kilos) to help your bones.

I did read exercise is essential. I read a suggestion a long time ago. It said if you don't have weights, you can train with things around the house like a can of soup in each hand.

I really hope he gave you tips to reverse the damage. Start taking vitamins, and also a separate calcium supplement. Get more milk in your diet for sure.

In the stomach? That sounds painful, a lot more than I thought it would be. But I want my bones to be healthy so will do what I need to.

@JudyEv Why the stomach, though? I thought you get rabies shots there.

@akalinus It doesn't hurt really. Just a prick the same as if it's in your arm.

I had osteoporosis and was on Fosamax for a while. Now I take Calcium and D3 every day and don't have that problem anymore. Make sure you take D3 and not just D. Have a good weekend.

@LindaOHio My son used to come down from St. Pete but he does not have a car now. Until he gets a new one, I have to figure something out.

First and foremost, don't be frightened!!! When you're out and around do you happen to notice older people that are slumped over? Thats from the bone density loss, or osteoporosis. Now, you need to start taking your vitamins. Vitamin D and calcium are at the top of the list, as long as you're taking vitamins add vitamin C and multivitamins to the list. It will take a little while, but your bones will build back up and there will be less chance of falling and breaking a bone (as for glassware or china that's a different story. That depends on what part of the house or store you're in. Since the doctor wasn't too specific about what bones where and didn't advise you to walk with a cane, you still must be in pretty good shape. When I took the fall on the motorscooter, I only broke my ankle, so my bones must still be in good shape, although I should be taking calcium and D vitamins to my list. Also, exercise will help strengthen the bones, but don't start exercising by playing pro football!!! Start with walks, short ones and then lengthening them as you go along. I remember when I lived with Mom she had us on enough vitamins that we didn't need to eat breakfast after swallowing all the pills. If you need more information, there are some really great books about the various vitamins and eating right (though you might have to dump some favorites....like chocolate.) If you would like some titles let me know and I'll see if I can find them online.

She said it was in my hip and legs but not in the spine. I desperately do not want it in the spine. I am eating yogurt and need some calcium supplements.i don't know how to get them.

My doctor gave me a prescription to take weekly. Also told me to take D3 and Calcium. I couldn't stomach the calcium so the pharmacist said Tums would work. The next bone scan showed improvement, so the dr. Took me off the weekly prescription for a year. Weight bearing exercise is vital to help bone density. I was in the beginning stages and didn't require the shots. So far.

I have osteopenia and I am still young. They recommended vitamin D, calcium and physical exercises. And I need to gain weight. They said medication is ruining my bones and teeth.

Is that considered worse or better than I osteoporosis? It makes sad that you have so many problems while young.
