Historical Figures and Accuracy

Stalin and Saddam are two men I've read off and on for decades, and there's SO many differing accounts, even minor things. There's a handful of stories of a possible trade for prisoner Jakov. I think readers should always investigate the source, and probably better not to read a well-sourced book, so truth and fiction isn't garbled together. I always like direct sources -- interviews, speeches, books they wrote, and then his family, etc., not a bunch of exiled dissidents. Everyone loves to mention Solzhenitsyn, but historians acknowledge half of Archipalego was folklore. His wife said the same, and said she typed some of it herself. I also recommend (and still look for) documentaries, books, and anything from the other side for balance. I tried to watch "Lenin in October" yesterday, but haven't been able to sleep in the last couple days, but I wanted to see how he would be depicted.
