I’ve Got the Music in Me…

Way back in 1995, my late, lamented friend Denny asked me to undertake a task: he wanted my 100 favorite country songs. He, thankfully, shrank the options significantly by providing one stipulation: the songs must have made the Billboard “Top Country” charts. That put a little bit of a limitation on it, eliminating anything before 1944 (when the country chart began). Still, it took me nine months to have that baby. After I finished that list, I gave him something he didn’t ask for: the same thing from the Billboard “Hot 100” charts. Yes, that took a long time, too. For the rest of the year (or at least 100 of the last 120 days of the year) you’re going to be subjected to those two lists. You’ll notice just WHY my brother is afraid to get in the car with me: not my driving, but my iPod. The country list is pretty straightforward, but the “hot 100” (I can’t say “rock” because…well…there’s a Perry Como song on it, and he ain’t rock! ) is all over the place. Of course, anyone who has Jim Reeves AND The Clash on their iPod is going to get weird looks to begin with. Since I started on myLot my main subject has been music. I’ve got the music in me. And now you’re going to see just how deeply. Oh, this Kiki Dee song didn’t make the list. The one song of hers that I’d love to have on the list didn’t chart.

Kiki Dee was well known over here, but mainly for her duet, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, with Elton John, which got to No.1 in the UK charts. My favourite of hers was Amoureuse.

This was her only hit in America (besides the Elton duet). She wrote a song called “Sugar on the Floor,” which Elton later covered. I love that song.

@FourWalls I don’t remember that one. She had a good voice but not a great deal of success.

@Orson_Kart — I’m sort of surprised that she wasn’t that successful here, because that was a time when we had a lot of female singers on the charts. Here’s “Sugar on the Floor.”

It was a pretty big hit in ‘74, but got eclipsed by “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”

Indeed! I found out that Heart covered it live, but it was originally done by Kiki.

@FourWalls I probably heard the Heart version on the radio instead of Kiki's.

I can't see Kiki Dee without thinking Elton John. Haven't heard her version before; but I like it. Have a great day.

Hey, it gives you fodder for no less than 100 posts. That has to be worth at least a pittance of a payoff. lol By the way, this is a good song.

@porwest — well, I went to Lincoln’s Tomb while in Illinois a couple of weeks ago, so why not get his image deposited in the account?

I'm looking forward to seeing what your choices are. I'm not surprised it took so long to decide.

I review this list every 2-3 years, too, to make sure the song stay with me. They do.

Only well-rounded people have Perry Como, the Clash and Jim Reeves in their musical lineup
