Howdy from an unusual place for me: my dining room table! I’m waiting on the HVAC company to arrive and do the semi-annual maintenance on my system and change the filter. While I wait for them I’ll give you another song on the list of my 100 favorite songs that made the Billboard country music charts. Amarillo By Morning - George Strait Probably no surprise here (or anywhere on this list, save for one song ). King George has kept country sounding country amid all the crock, hick-hop, bro-co, and whatever that is that Beyoncé did. This song was written by Terry Stafford, who recorded it first. Stafford’s one big claim to fame as a singer was “Suspicion” in 1964, where he sounded so much like Elvis that Elvis covered the song and couldn’t beat him on the chart. (He co-wrote another song that’ll be along on this list.) There’s no pick-up truck, but it does have rodeo, which is better than pick-up trucks for country stereotypes. (For those of you wondering about “looking for eight when they pull that gate,” that’s a reference to riding a bull in a rodeo. You have to stay on it for eight seconds. No, I don’t know how they came up with that length of time, but it is what it is.) Add lamenting the missing love (“lost my wife and a girlfriend somewhere along the way”) and the independence (“I ain’t got a dime but what I’ve got is mine”), and you have a pretty darn good country song. Add George Strait to it and it elevates it to a great country song. Amarillo By Morning Written by Terry Stafford and Paul Fraser Recorded by George Strait From Strait From the Heart, 1983 Peak chart position: #4 Today’s rock song: “Ain’t Even Done With the Night” Everything that I’ve got is just what I’ve got on:

Nothing like a rodeo song on the beach. Thinking of you today.

I’ve not heard this before, nor heard of George Strait, but he’s got a good voice, and I too like this song. Here’s another song mentioning Amarillo, which is more familiar to me:

@FourWalls Neil Sedaka was well liked over here. He wrote a lot of songs for other people and his own voice wasn’t bad either. I remember he wrote “Oh! Carol” as an homage to Carole King, which was a big hit. She wrote one back called “Oh, Neil” which wasn’t so popular, but nevertheless a great response.

Oh, I know that song. That was written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield, the legendary team that gave us things like “Calendar Girl” and “Love Will Keep Us Together.” George is a legend here, but as I’ve said many times, I don’t know how well (or in what way) American country music translates to other parts of the world. My favorite singer, Jim Reeves, was idolized in South Africa, for instance (to the point where they mobbed him and nearly tore his suit coat off of him when he visited in 1962).

We used to go to the rodeos around here. I hate seeing the riders get their hands caught in the rigging. Eric Bogle wrote a very evocative song about an old rodeo rider.

Terry sounds more like Elvis on that song than Elvis. Sorry Elvis... Anyway, I give George's Amarillo by Morning a big thumbs up, and I don't even own a pickup truck! Can't believe that tune was not another #1 Country hit for Mr. Strait. Anyway, he one upped that Elvis impersonator on this one, lol.

Yeah, Terry out-Elvised Elvis on “Suspicion.” You don’t need a pick-up truck to like old country music. That didn’t become a thing until the 90s.

Yep, the Sedaka tune is fabulous, although I don’t think he really cares about finding the way to Amarillo.

Probably tied for my favorite concert I ever went to, between George and Allan Jackson. Both didn't use fancy fireworks, lights, or running around swinging on ropes. Just stood there, with a guitar and sung their hits.

I know, talent doesn’t require distractions. Maybe that’s why I loved Harry Chapin’s shows so much.
