Anyone experience this?

So most of you know I get migraines. A few days ago I started to get lightning flashes in my vision. I thought they might be auras (for a migraine), and sure enough yesterday or late the night before I got a migraine. Then my vision really started getting weird. Now, it’s like someone is throwing tinsel into my eyes. It still could be an aura (some migraine sufferers get auditory or visual disturbances before, during and after one, called an aura), but in the past my auras, which have been rare, have just been a heaviness on my head which warned me one was coming. Has anyone ever experienced this? It’s just odd. I’m not sure what’s causing it.

How long did the flashes last?

@Kandae11 How odd. That must have been a very disconcerting feeling.

A few seconds. I probably have a few, brief flashes every ten minutes.

@AmbiePam Some time in March, l saw flashes at the corner of my eyes -lasted for 20 minutes. I got the feeling it was a result of something l ate.

I haven't experienced this before. Next time you see your doctor you should mention it to him to make sure all is well. Sorry that you are suffering with migraines

Thank you. They are so much better than they usually are though. I started seeing a lady who does cupping/massage, and she’s made a world of difference.

That sounds scary. I'm glad you are going to get it checked out. I also hope it is better in the morning.

I get those flashes but they do not last long. I do not suffer from migraine.

Have you noticed any other changes? That'd be a good place to start.

That’s all I’ve noticed. The migraine I had finally went away completely this afternoon.

@kaylachan The migraine wasn’t any different than previous ones. Yes, I can still occasionally see it.

I have had flashes of light beforehand, but no tinsel. Fought them all my life and I know it’s miserable. I wish you didn’t have them, I wish no one did. So many times mine are on the left side of my head, but I have had every single test known and they still can’t fix it. I wish they could!

Yes, I have had light flashes of bright white light as well as coloured lights during the starts of a migraine. I haven't had those in years, since my late 30's really, and I wonder if it is related to age. Others told me during their age in the late 30's and early 40's similar findings.

This makes me feel better. I’ve had auras before, but sitting here and almost flinching because it looks like someone is throwing tinsel, has caught me off guard.

I have them Amber. Those are called "ophtalmic migraines", you see flashes and colors dancing in your eyes, it is very annoying. I talked about this with my eye doctor who told me that there is nothing he can do, usually those do not last long.

Thank you so much, Anna. I feel better knowing others have experienced it without anything being “wrong”.

@AmbiePam The first time I was scared, when I went to see my doctor I explained what happened and now I am only "annoyed", but no more worried.

I am lucky that I had migraines when I went to university but since that time no more. It must have been the stress of school. I don't know what you are experiencing but perhaps this can help

I have! I get them more now than when I was younger. I thought we talked about this, that you weren't supposed to get migraines anymore.

I'd suggest getting to E.R., lightning flashes in your vision could be a sign of serious vision threatening problems. Not trying to fear monger but going blind in my right eye (though it was temporary) taught me to be more vigilant with eye care. Better safe than sorry.

I can’t drive at night to go now, but I’ll call my doctor tomorrow, as soon as he opens. Thank you for the advice.

Amber, I'm so sorry to hear this. Auras aren't usually dangerous, but they can be scary. I've had them over the years, sometimes a migraine would follow, sometimes not. More often a migraine without an aura. Mine usually start with a little sparkly silver sliver in the upper left corner of my eye, then progresses into bright, flashing lights in a circle. Have you had a chance to get your Neurologist to check you? You know I'll be praying for you.

Yes, I have. But in my case it is not related to migraines.

My mom has this. The doctor said it's nothing serious. It's normal because of aging.

Oh no, that sounds rough! Migraines are bad enough without all those crazy visual disturbances. Hopefully, it’s just an aura and nothing more serious, but it might be worth checking in with your doc just to be safe. Sending good vibes your way—hope it eases up soon!
