Giant sized food.

My son in law loves his garden. He is very successful with it, always has been. Yesterday, he gave me some of his delicious tomatoes (mine are either processed right now, or they are getting ripe, but I currently have none ready to eat.) We always share our produce bounty back and forth. He had several very, very large tomatoes. This one he sent home with me, and it's absolutely massive! I put it on a dinner plate for a picture, so you could see how big it is. I also weighed it. FIVE pounds and 2 ounces! I have had some whopper tomatoes in my garden, but never five pounds, We both use our coffee grounds to mulch around our plants, but this is an incredibly large tomato! I was impressed. To clarify, it IS ripe. This is the type of tomato it is, the inside is streaked red and orange.

@MarieCoyle - I am so glad he can take care of his vegetable garden, because he loves so much to do that. You told me in the past that he is so kind to you. I am glad, because you deserve to have those around you who love you.

He absolutely loves to work outside and to plant things. He has done it his entire life, but since they moved back here he has really done more than ever. He heart is nearly as big as that tomato, he is always doing something for me, or for someone. He is so, so good to my girl...they seem so happy together! Thank you, Anna.

We said the same thing, Snowy, that this big tomato has the Christmas spirit! I measured it across at the widest point. Just lacks a couple of tenths of an inch being 8 inches across. Simply massive!

How impressive! It’s a gorgeous mass of a tasty blessing as my 13 year old niece put it when I showed her the picture. I can’t imagine having a five pound tomato.

Once a few years ago, I had one grow to four pounds before it ripened. I had to pick it a bit early, as it was toward the top part of the plant, and was trying hard to break the stalk down! She sounds like a very expressive young lady, Amber.

I have never seen a tomato this size or this color. With that size, you can make tomato sauce for the season with a couple of them.

We have several colors of tomatoes. Light yellow, deep golden, dusty red, deep red, streaky like this one...it goes on and on. All are good! And yes, it's absolutely huge, Marga!

Do you have a deck or a porch area you could grow things in pots? I’ve done that before.

I certainly never get any like that! My friend, who is originally from Romania, sometimes gets sent garden produce by her aunt. She puts things like peppers and tomatoes on a bus and sends them to the UK! Of course then there are several ripe things all at once so the friend shares them out and like you, I have received enormous tomatoes. Since no-one else in my family likes raw tomatoes I get them all to myself, one of those is enough for lunch for me for a week!

Hey, if it works and you get free fresh veggies, that's a good score! I love fresh tomatoes, always have. Of course we cook them into sauces and various dishes as well, but I LOVE fresh ones. So good.

@porwest We ate some of it yesterday. It was honestly delicious, and I was surprised. As you said, sometimes bigger is not better. But this one was! Son in law says he is saving seeds from that plant to see what it can produce next year. Who knows?

At the end of the day, the idea of growing food, is to be able to eat it! It's edible, the other tomatoes from that particular plant have been delicious, so I am sure this whopper will be as well.

None of us have ever seen a tomato this big. But it IS a tomato--I think it's a freaked out plant, myself, but the plant was just a regular looking tomato plant. The other tomatoes the plant has produced are of a normal size, a couple a bit big but nothing like this whopper!
