Is it selfish to look after yourself first or is it an important part of self-care?

After a few experiences, I have been more into self-care. It is just prioritizing my mental, e emotional and physical wellbeing before other things. It is helping me to handle the everyday challenges and support others.
I heard a few times from really selfish and self-centred people that I am selfish! Interesting point is I have been caring, paying as well as doing what’s possible for these same people. Especially when they have challenging times. While I had the tough challenging times and trauma, none of these people cared for me! They did not help me on financial side, neither they offered moral support, even via a phone call. Ever since those traumatic experiences, I have been doing self-care. Does not mean I only care for me and not others. It is just that I am protecting myself a little more. I need to look at my well being before helping other’s wellbeing.
Is looking yourself selfish or do you believe it is a critical part of self-care?

We have to look after ourselves and stay healthy to look after others. There was a time when I cared for everyone in the family excepting myself. The result was I became a bundle of diseases. I realized this and started looking after myself. Today being 60 plus I am much healthier than I was before.

Thats a great example! We sacrifice often our health for others and we should always have a look at our health before looking for others. Thank you for sharing your experience!

@RevivedWarrior I learned the hard way but I don't want others to have the same experience.
