Campbell's Wants to Change Its Name

After 155 years, Campbell Soup Company has proposed a name change to shareholders for the company, and I think in a matter like this, shareholders will embrace it. It's an insignificant thing on the whole and doesn't impact operations or profits or any other aspect of the business. It's just a name change. CEO Mark Clouse wants to drop "Soup" from the company name to reflect that Campbell's is a much more diverse company than just its signature soups. And that seems to make sense. Beyond the iconic red, white and black label soup cans Campbell's is more than well known for, the company is home to other brands like Goldfish, Lance, Snyder's of Hanover, Pepperidge Farm, Swanson, Prego and others. The Campbell Company, I think, more appropriately fits the company it has become, and I approve of the name change.

I had no idea they own all these companies. Why did they decide to do it now and did not do it before?

@porwest if it’s more than just soups than it does make sense. Otherwise people will think they are just about soups. I don’t buy canned soup anymore but when I did I bought progressive brand.

@lovebuglena You mean Progresso. Progressive is an insurance company. Progresso is made by General Mills.

According to Clouse, the CEO, he basically stated that the company has been on a "transformative journey." He went on to say that, “This subtle yet important change retains the company’s iconic name recognition, reputation and equity built over 155 years while better reflecting the full breadth of the company’s portfolio.” It simply says, while soups are certainly part of our heritage and beginnings, it's not the only thing we do. Like I said, I think it makes sense.

I've never heard of any products other than soup but that's okay. I have my head in the sand at times.

@porwest I'd say they don't sell here. I've never heard of any of them.

Maybe some of the other brands don't sell in Australia? All of them are pretty well known around here.

Whatever... It only says Campbell's Soup on the soup cans. The other products don't even say Campbell's on the label.

Well, they are not changing the product names. Only the company name.

@BarBaraPrz Right. Exactly. Kind of what I alluded to in my post. Just a name change, nothing more. Doesn't really impact anything.

Yep. Many companies own quite a few brands. Diversification in business is just good business. Take Pepsi. They own all sorts of things; Frito-Lay, Quaker Oats, GatorAde and countless others.

@porwest i guess either they don't sell them here, or perhaps under a different name, or else those brands cover things I don't buy. I just looked up 'Prego' brand for example and can see they make a line of pasta sauces, while Snyder's of Hanover seem to make pretzel pieces. I've never seen either of those here and an online search only brings up Amazon or Ebay as potential sources, so presumably imported.

Maybe they don't sell the other brands in the UK? I find that surprising, but I guess it is possible.

@Fleura Usually when you go to a company website it will list brands it sells in other countries. Being that there are no "alternative" brand names listed at Campbell's, I would assume they aren't selling them under different names there.

A smart move and good idea from a marketing standpoint. Although the public will still think of it as a soup company.

@porwest Good point. So many ballparks and stadiums changing their name affiliation to the highest bidder. At least they didn't change the name of Busch Stadium, lol.

@dgobucks226 Gosh. Who knows? One day that may well change. Maybe it will be like Wrigley Field?

Pretty much so. It's kind of like the old Miller Park in Milwaukee. Now it's called American Family Insurance Field. It will NEVER be that to me. lol

I think that's more sensible, because I think the word "soup" limiting what their brand is actually selling. I think it is a great marketing idea and a great step for the future of the company.

Seems like now it's been reported he's getting a bit of backlash from shareholders. I guess they are wanting to stick to the tradition of things. We'll have to wait and see how it plays out.

When I heard this on the news and the other brands I was surprised. I knew Campbells was a big company and more than soup but had no idea that they owned Goldfish, Lance, Snyder's of Hanover, Pepperidge Farm, etc. Changing the name makes sense

Most brands are owned by much larger companies who own many more brands. It's mostly about diversification. If one brand falls out of popularity, they have others to keep the business going and make up the difference.

It will be interesting to see the name change. And that too after 155 years. Not sure if there was a brand that rebranded after these many years. Guess they would then repackage their logo , colours and even packaging. Perhaps , that could do renew the interest in the products atleast for sometime. Rebranding can do a lot of good if done properly . Plus , it could be perhaps for new business directions and path forward . Not sure , how many would be interested in not seeing the "change" and stick to the old campbell soup label. I was not aware they had other products.
