As Luck Would Have It

The Epcot theme park at Walt Disney World is currently hosting its wildly popular annual Food & Wine Festival, and part of the festival includes a concert series called "Eat to the Beat" (I wrote about this in a previous post). Most concerts take place on Friday/Saturday or Sunday/Monday evenings, and the bands play three sets, at 5:00pm, 6:30pm and 8:00pm.
There are more than a dozen bands I have seen or am planning to see at the concert series this year. I get off work at 4, and then it's an hour and a half drive to Disney World, a straight shot down I-75 and then the Florida Turnpike. Because I leave work on time instead of cutting out early, we usually miss the first set of the music, but are able to catch the second and third sets.
But this past Friday, it seems the odds were stacked against us. The band we were going to see was Hoobastank, a band that I'm not too terribly familiar with, but love their biggest hit "The Reason." I wanted to experience more of their music.
It was pouring down rain the entire drive down. I mean coming down hard. Add in traffic accidents all up and down the interstate and turnpike, and we had a recipe for disaster. Traffic was at a dead standstill almost the entire way. Throw in some road construction (they're widening the turnpike from 4 lanes to 10 lanes in the Orlando area), and we just had no shot of getting to Disney on time to see the band. And to make matters worse, the bad thunderstorms were just sitting over the Orlando area and were expected to continue most of the night.
Well, while sitting in stopped traffic, I opened up my maps app on my phone and plugged in directions so that the app could show me the fastest alternative routes to Disney. All the options that came up basically were projecting a 3-hour drive due to weather and traffic. Which means we would miss the concert altogether. So I started looking at the app more closely, and saw some winding little backroads that looked like it could get us there. With nothing to lose, we exited the highway and started our adventure into parts unknown. We went through hidden neighborhoods, winding roads, and rolling hills. Got lost a few times... But as luck would have it, we ended up on a side road that practically dumped us out right at Disney. Just in time to catch the third and final set of Hoobastank. And...as luck would have it....it stopped raining! We hustled into the theme park, made our way back to the amphitheater where the band was playing, and found great seats close to the front of the stage, underneath the covered pavilion portion of the amphitheater, just as the band took the stage.
Little did we know that the second set was cancelled due to heavy lightning and storms, but...as luck would have it...the band announced that Disney was going to allow them to play a double set for their third and final act. So we ended up enjoying a great show after all our trouble trying to get there. And I absolutely loved their music! And the rain held off during their final performance of the evening.
After the show...as luck would have it...the theme park was practically empty due to the severe thunderstorms, so we were able to walk around and enjoy many of the food samplings of the festival before the evening's fireworks finale started.
Of course, as soon as we exited the theme park and got into our car to leave, it started pouring down rain again! But...as luck would have it...we experienced zero traffic our entire drive home. The only issue on the drive home was the heavy rain--which slowed us down a bit--but we still made good time and made it home safely.
People say we're crazy for traveling so much back and forth to Disney. but we have annual passes so it doesn't cost anything extra to go down there except for the little bit of gas to get there. And, as you can see from this discussion, we always create some very memorable experiences!

I remember Hoobastank very well. I’m glad you got to listen to their set after all! My sister and her husband are surprising their three kids with a trip to Disneyworld this December. The oldest two have been, but not the five year old. The kids are going to be so excited when they find out.
Your enthusiasm for Disney matches my sister’s!

@thislittlepennyearns Because most music created after the 80s is crap. But I was most impressed with Hoobastank.

Yes, we have annual passes. The regular ticket prices are so outrageous that I don't know how anyone can afford it. With my annual pass, I only have to go to the theme park 6 or 7 times a year for it to pay for itself. I usually go about 50 times a year, so you can see that I definitely get my money's worth.

@moffittjc If I ever go there, will you lend me your annual pass?

@nela13 I would be happy to lend my annual pass to you. But we'll have to disguise you as a man and figure out how to give you my fingerprints so that you can pass the fingerprint scan to get into the theme parks!

I guess you got to see some great music for your troubles. Sis and fam one time took back roads to come here from the Baltimore area, they had been picking up their one son, anyway they managed to get here in about 2.5 hours using back roads. I was impressed. On the main roads even if the traffic was good, I would have estimated 3 hours.

Sometimes the interstates, freeways and turnpikes are not always the fastest way to get places. I don't know how it is in your state, but here in Florida the highways are always under construction. And we know what that means....delays, delays, delays. With over a thousand people per day moving to Florida, they are always widening our highways.

@snowy22315 Oh yes, ALWAYS under construction. And they never think ahead and be proactive about it, they always wait until congestion and traffic delays are out of control, and then they react and try to fix the roads. Which just makes the mess even worse.

Does that annual pass get you on a special “annual pass holder” highway too?
Glad you hade a wonderful time. Rain can be our friend.

@moffittjc — as much money as Disney brings in for Florida, it’s a wonder they don’t. (Oh, yeah, DeSantis doesn’t like Disney….)

@FourWalls Actually, I think DeSantis and Disney are back to being friends again. They've each dropped their lawsuits against each other, and Disney has agreed to spend umpteen billion dollars in theme park improvements and expansions over the next 10 years. That made Ron very happy. It's amazing how money trumps personal and political beliefs when it comes right down to it.

We often joke that the state should create dedicated lanes on the highways for Disney pass holders.

Some people would get angry or frustrated, and even possibly turn around and go home and say "forget it." But we're a "go with the flow" type of family, we just try to make the best of every situation we find ourselves in.

@JudyEv It almost does always work itself out. Having a good positive attitude about any situation you're in can greatly affect the outcome of the experience. That's why we say that we try to always make the most of a bad situation. Most of the time, good does come out of those situations. Or, we at least will have memories to laugh about years later.

What a stroke of luck you had to venture off of the beaten path and make it there just in time to see what you did.
I think that it is great that you have passes and take full advantage of what you can at the park.
Sounds like it was alot of fun-good for you.

The regular ticket prices to Disney World are completely outrageous. If I had to pay for a ticket each time I went, I would probably never go. But I've been an annual pass holder for 25 years, so I've got a great price (I get a small discount every year when I renew). I only have to visit the theme parks 6 or 7 times for the pass to pay for itself, but I probably go about 50 times a year, so the cost of the pass is definitely worth it. And this year, I'm going to see about a dozen concerts there, which costs me nothing but gas money to see since we have annual passes. You can't beat that deal!

Yeah, we definitely got lucky! And I'm glad we had smooth sailing on the way home. I would have not been a happy camper if we would have experienced any traffic jams on the return trip.

When I'm driving, I don't mind being in heavy rain or thunder and lightning. But when someone else is driving (in this instance it was my daughter), I get a little on edge. But not too bad where I'm nervous or anxious or anything like that.
