Hello!
My family has always bought things already cooked as a shortcut to cooking. Examples are cans of pumpkin for pumpkin pie and the can has to be the one with the spices added.
Wednesday, I saw my peer for our regular weekly session. She was in my kitchen helping me with something else and noticed the last time i went grocery shopping, I bought cups of applesauce with cinnamon , that i have sitting out on the table. I recently started eating applesauce either after lunch or dinner. almost daily It is totally delicious!
My peer has two very young kids and she plans taking them apple picking in the country in a couple of weeks. She told me she is going to make homemade applesauce with the apples she picks. My peer, said when she made applesauce she will bring me some!
Then if i like it, if I want she will teach me to make it myself and I can have some homemade applesauce.
It should be good as my peer is a phenomenal cook! Don't tell my sister, but my peer is an even better cook than my sister!
What is your favorite food cooked from scratch? Have you ever cooked anything from scratch?

It sounds delicious to be made homemade! However, I have only ever had applesauce that is already made and packaged in a cup.
I think I will love it as my peer is a super cook. Anything we cook together is extremely tasty!

@LovesEverybody my sister in law was here for a party yesterday and asked if she could take a few apples for applesauce off our tree.

@shaggin how many apples does it take to make applesauce? will your sister-in-law bring you any applesauce she makes? My peer, Courtney, never said how many apples it takes to make applesauce. she just said it takes apples and she listed other things
My sister told me she might make lasagna this week since it is going to be a cooler week than last week and said if she does, she will bring me a slice or two. My sis is a phenomenal cook so I look forward to it if she makes it and brings me some.

@loveseverybody I only cook from scratch - couldn’t put anything canned in my mouth!! Cooking from scratch isn’t as hard as some folk think. You could make fresh apple sauce blindfolded.

I always wanted to cook from scratch. But my family always takes shortcuts. I am willing to cook applesauce from scratch as I have started to eat it almost daily.
I never had apple sauce from scratch but am excited to try it! Yes, my peer had told me how easy it is and it only needs a few ingredients.

I guess maybe something like stuffing or french toast. I don't cook from scratch as much as I should.

@LovesEverybody French toast is so easy. I am surprised you forgot how to make it. I like stuffing from scratch, low sodium.

@snowy22315 I have an idea of how to make French toast, but I would have to read a recipe to see how much eggs and milk to add, also I haven't made it or eaten it in 6 or 7 years. That would be a good way to use up all the bread. i will look up a recipe!
My sister's sister-in-law makes stuffing from scratch, but my sister never tried it. I would like to try it one day. I would love to make it for myself

Years ago when I used to cook, I would make French toast. It was delicious! I haven't had it in many years. Maybe I will ask my peer to teach me to make it one day.
My sister's sister-in-law has come to my sister's house each Thanksgiving for as long as I can remember and always brings her homemade stuffing. It is pretty good!

@LovesEverybody That's a shame that you weren't able to learn to cook when you were younger. It might have been easier then.

@JudyEv I agree with you. I probably would have been able to handle college and get a degree had I been in the culinary program.
My sister told me some months ago when I told her I wasn't allowed to go to culinary school when we drove by where I went to college. She said that my parents thought it would be too hard of a job when I graduated from it.

I think my parents felt the same about how buying readymade foods is more convenient. I used to beg Mommy to teach me to cook but she refused every time. I tried to drop my literature major in college when the college got a culinary degree program but my parents refused that

The applesauce should be easy with my peer as we have cooked together in the past and she really knows what she is doing when she cooks. And whatever she helps me cook she has the magical touch!

@LovesEverybody Applesauce is simple to make. The "hardest" part is peeling the apples. That isn't even hard it is just time consuming.

@NJChicaa I don't think peeling apples is hard either. I know how to do it. I grew up watching my mom peel apples as she made her famous apple pie quite often. Everybody begged her to make them an apple pie.
I am sure with the two of us that we should be able to get the apples peeled in half the time!

I was brought up to cook from scratch. I've tried some of those instant/frozen/boxed things, I am not impressed. Most of them have some truly nasty ingredients I do not want to eat. I don't honestly know how entire families can buy all of those ready-to-heat and serve meals, very expensive, usually have a sodium content that's ridiculous...no, thanks. Everyone should know how to cook some meals and fix some basic things. It's not hard, just follow directions and use common sense, then eat! You can do it!
I find myself wishing you could go with your friend and pick fresh apples. I think you would have a wonderful time doing that.

I do hope that your peer can help you to get past your fear of the stove. I also hope you can get to go see the horses. Spending time with animals is soothing and good for you.
If I were you I would try very hard to work on learning to make some simple meals. It would be so much better and cheaper for you. I am absolutely positive you can do this, Jennifer!

@MarieCoyle it was my trauma for the stove, but I am working on it. I keep thinking back to those days long ago when I cooked a few times a week. Those days I cooked a lot of casseroles.
Those were the good old days
I just remembered something I don't think I ever told you, or anybody. I actually made lasagna rolls in the crockpot. I thought they were delicious! I saw the recipe online and decided to try it
My case manager would come once a week then and she sent a colleague of hers and that lady thought they smelled yummy! I felt bad I couldn't offer her one because they needed a couple more hours in the crockpot, I should ask my sister where the crockpot is and maybe I could make something in it?! I would love to find an easy lasagna roll recipe and make it in the crockpot. I lost the recipe I copied back in the day, and that was so wonderful.
You know what? You are right, I CAN cook! I am a Dombrowski after all and as daddy always said we can do whatever we put our mind to! thanks for encouraging me!

@MarieCoyle Years ago I used to make kielbasa and sauerkraut in the crockpot as a tradition I had for myself for New Year's Day. the only reason I stopped that was I kept getting sick on the sauerkraut. it smelled delicious in the house. it didn't take long only about 2 to 3 hours.
I once made a chocolate cake in the crockpot. tried is a better word as the cake crumbled coming out and I had chunks of chocolate. but I chose to look on the positive side as that was believe it or not one of my better baking products as nothing else I baked myself has turned out edible
I didn't know that about looking up ingredients to look for a recipe
thanks for suggesting to eat a baked potato and microwave a vegetable. i often wondered how you and other people on mylot know what to eat with your entree. last night I had a pulled pork sandwich and that was all. I didn't know
I am going to try cooking again. Courtney, my peer, and I are cooking scalloped potatoes and stuffing next week. She gave me two appointments in a row for next week.
Now that you mentioned it, I DID cook once before and I remember having fun! I can't do anything with the oven until next week as I don't know how to turn on the oven. Courtney knows how to turn it on. When i got my new oven a few years ago it became too technological for me. i also learned we have to preheat the oven in my last oven i didn't do that. this oven makes the user preheat it
Thanks for the most encouraging post i have ever read!

I always used to cook from scratch, I loved making meals but now that I am on my own I prefer just to pop stuff into my toaster oven and heat them up, I hope you learn to make applesauce,

I feel like you sometimes. It is just me so why not put something in the microwave? But at the same time, I have a great time cooking when my peer helps me cook.
I am mixed as to whether I like cooking from scratch
I hope I get to make homemade applesauce too!

Neither have I! due to some circumstances I don't know if we will do that now.
However next week my peer gave me a double appointment and we are going to cook some things. I put stuffing and scalloped potatoes on my grocery order since we decided to make them
