Workplaces should stop glorifying working beyond normal hours

There are certain organizations that informally promote long working hours. This is true in most Asian and African countries. They glorify the long working hours, especially post-midnight. They call the workers as most hardworking and loyal etc. They do not get paid in cash or any benefits for the extra hours they put in. There has been a news of a death of employee for EY in India, who was constantly working 15-18 hours a day. The work-related stress and not proper sleep seems to have impacted the employee. We all know that constant overtime leads to burnout and long-term health problems. There are many who sacrifice personal lives for sake of work. They all do these, so that they could earn well and get their recognitions. Sadly, only few get recognized and worse all lose to health issues. I worked for 3 years for toxic company and well it was a living hell everyday including weekends on all those 3 years. They would call even on weekends to extract work. There was no work life balance. In many countries, strict over time rules are yet to implemented. So, stop working in an environment which glorifying too much work and long working hours! There are btter companies and jobs in the outside world!

This toxic work culture has to stop some where. It was shocking to read about this young 26 years old loosing life to toxic work culture and a toxic manager. Employees have the moral responsibility to take care of the mental and emotional health of the employees. Human beings have to be treated like human beings and not like robots. This mother's tweet is gone viral and so many are coming up with their share of sufferings. Some legal regulations have to be brought up.

Legal rulings are there but rules are often circumvented to fulfill the needs.

This culture is not good. Often managers unduly pressurize folks to work on the weekend. Top Management also creates such pressure conditions. I read the case of ghe EY employee. It is another wake up call for the whole system. Sometimes people refusing to work on the weekends tend to lose brownie points but I think it is better to take a stand. You surely had a very tough 3 years in that company.

I used to work long hours and in double shifts in a multinational software company. I would often suffer from chronic fatigue and burnout, not to mention anxiety!! I finally decided to opt out and work from home instead as a freelance writer. I lost the big salary but I've never been more relaxed and free. I don't think I'll ever go back to corporate work. I'd been offered several times, and I always declined. The pay is always tempting, but when I look at the demands of the job, it's not worth it. I'd rather earn a modest income than suffer from all this corporate injustice.
