Opposite the London Stone are these plaques which mark the boundary between London Parish Churches. I was wondering if they are there to prevent dodgy clergy from taking tithes from another parish and pocketing them.
These are pretty common in London, but in the country as a whole it is thought only five per cent of markers survive. Frequently these markers are all that remain of once thriving churches.
St M B marks the boundary of St Mary Bothaw whose name is derived from Boat-Haw or Boat House. The church was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666 and never rebuilt.
St S L S is St Swithin London Stone. This church was also destroyed in the Great Fire and rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren, who also rebuilt St Paul's Cathedral. It was badly damaged by bombing during World War II and was finally demolished in 1962.
