There is a massive hurricane headed toward the Florida Panhandle. It is named Helene and it could be a category 5. The center could land there or turn more toward us. We will get weather from it no matter which way it goes. We are going shopping when my friend gets off work. We need supplies to tide us over. We expect power outages and shortages. The governor has declared a state of emergency in 41 counties, including ours. If you are a person who prays, please pray for Florida.

My anxiety does not let me worry about every hurricane, I have been in Daytona Beach for 7 years I am still here and a large apartment complex is across the street, I will see wind and rain and then things will settle down, It I let myself dwell on these things I would not be of use to myself and then cats for many weeks afterward, Stay safe and good that you got supplies,

All the news reports I've seen don't have it getting stronger than a cat 3. That's still what's considered a major hurricane. I'm just outside of the danger zone, but the wind will pick up and we'll see some showers.

We can only go through it and hope for the best. Even a tropical storm can be dangerous.

@2ndchances24 After one of the hurricanes when I lived in the trailer park, I walked around the park and took photos of some of the damages. One house was laying in a heap in the middle of the street. Another, was blown away and the resident found shelter with a friend. One house had palm trees laying over it. They smashed his car port and damaged other parts of the trailer.

I totally agree, I've been in a few hurricanes & NONE of them are nothing to take lightly, no matter the size it is cause a 1 can be dangerous, I was in Ivan & Dennis & Iren & others in the 80's.

Thank you. I hope we can stay here. People never want to leave home in a storm but we might not have a choice. We have cats. Shelters and motels don't want animals.

Thanks, Judy. Different forecasters say different things. They are worried about storm surge. I doubt we will get much, if any. But, you just don't know these days.

@akalinus I think the forecasters like to cover their backs and err on the side of caution.

It is still dumping lots of rain here in Jamaica ( it passed this way before reaching Helene status) Started from Sunday and even though it has moved on the rain is still here. It took such a long time to develop l doubt it will reach cat 5 strength.

Some are saying that it has been so hot for so long that conditions are good for a big hurricane.

Good luck with the hurricane. Hope it passes by far, far away. Have to say it would take a lot to get me to live in that part of the world, but then my uncle does

I would rather cope with this once in a while than deal with blizzards, ice storms, freezing rain, and so forth for months at a time. I have not worn a jacket in months.

We are keeping an eye on the weather. We will do whatever we have to but do not want to leave. There is so much traffic here any day. Evacuation would be such a mess.

My daughter and her family are in Pinellas county, which is one of the 41. But it's at the very bottom of the danger line, and I know it floods there a lot during hurricanes. They ended up buying a home with a higher elevation than their first Florida home, due to the high cost of flood insurance in the first home. So far, so good. I know all you can really do is get ready for the maybe, and wait. We don't need to say, hey, don't forget...Floridians seem to know the drill for hurricanes. Just be safe, please, don't take any chances!

We have been watching videos on youtube about Helene. Won't really know much until tomorrow. We were here for Michael...stayed in our house..trees around us fell, but not on our house. It was awful, but it doesn't look like our area will be getting much more than a tropical storm...storm surge abour 3 feet. But, like I said won't really know until tomorrow. If it starts coming our way...we will be heading west. Not staying for another one.

I was watching one of the weather report guys. He said storm surge could be 15 feet. That is probably the upper extreme but I guess it is possible.

We lucked out. Some areas around us got ocean surge and some houses were destroyed. The storm was farther west of us than was forecast so we did not even lose power.

I pray for you and all those who are going to face this hurricane. I have watched on news channels the damage caused by storms and hurricanes in your and some other countries.I wonder why so many hurricanes come there. Is it due to geographical reasons?? Stay safe.
