Complete and Utter Devastation

Complete and utter devastation are the only words I can think of to describe the aftermath of hurricane Helene here in western NC, where I live. I can't imagine what it like in Florida where it made landfall.
Our weather last week was messy. It rained every day, and we had a tornado spotted near our church Thursday but thankfully it didn't touch down. This was our lead up to Friday when Helene wreaked havoc on our area.
Up to its arrival we had almost 3 inches of rain, after she came through, we had not quite 16 inches of rain. Our lake, rivers all overflowed their banks. Roads collapsed, internet and cell phone service stopped, for some power too (somehow, we managed to keep ours own through it). Tonight there are still some in our county without power. But almost everyone has the internet and cell phone service restored.
We have 17 roads closed, one of which is a major connector to the county next to us. It has a dam at it and boats were going over the dam, into and under the bridge. The engineers won't know the extent of the damage until the water recedes. Some have said the road needs to be repaired on both sides going onto the bridge.
When the internet first came back on, first thing I did was contact family out of state because we had no way of telling them we are okay. Then I began to see the devastation in areas next to us, places we visited often. There are places we love to go to, especially in the fall to see the colors, and some of those towns are gone. I can't wrap my mind around it, the pictures.
Harder yet is to read about all the missing and all the dead, especially in the Ashville area which is about 40 or so minutes from us.
We had some water in our basement, nothing unexpected with the amount of rain we got. Our home is still standing, we have the essentials that we need, we were able to go to Mike's Mom on Saturday to check on her, and to church yesterday. And we celebrated Mike's birthday today. So, though life is completely different than it was this time last week, we are still blessed.
To our friends in Florida, I hope that you fared well through it. Our pastor friend didn't. The church he pastors and the home he lived in, both of which were just finished being repaired from hurricane Ida a little over a year ago, were completely destroyed again. Pray for them. For those in Georgia and S Carolina and here in my part of the world.

I´m so very sorry! Every time I read the word hurricane, my thoughts go to Katrina. I had visited New Orleans 2 years before the Katrina and fell in love with it. nd then it takes years to repair in part because people tend to forget.

I went to a wedding in New Orleans one month after hurricane Ida hit the city in 2021. It was a powerful Cat-4 storm that caused a lot of damage--which was evident everywhere we went--but strangely the beauty of the city and its cultural were still evident. Despite the damage and destruction, I fell in love with the city and its people.

Just to know it came in as a 4 & went down to a 2 just as it hit land
& the damage it did as it was pounding areas as it was moving.
This just shows why people should really pay attention to the
weather at ALL times & just know they can't think it'll be o.k.

I'm so glad you're ok. My prayers go to all those affected by Helene
This storm kinda reminds me of that snow storm a few years back that caused so much destruction back in 2012 or so. Your end of the USA never seems to get much of a break.

I was in the part of Florida directly in the path of Helene, and what we went through is nothing compared to what western NC is going through. My prayers go out to everybody that was in the path of this storm, no matter how hard or lightly they got hit. It disrupted so many lives.
And now we have another monster headed to Florida, only the 9th storm in history to have over 180 mph winds. It's just mind-boggling how fast these storms can form and build up.

Been watching the scenes of devastation. Bringing back memories of Hurricane Fiona, two years ago. Rebuilding is ongoing.

Yes and I read that there could be up to 600 deaths..that many are missing still. That was in the paper AlJazeera.

I didn't remember that your lived in NC. I lived in Greenville in the early eighties for two years. Loved it there but no hurricanes came thru when I was there.
I had a friend back then from Ashville. I'm glad that your and Mike dated well considering.

I live west of Charlotte. I didn't have any power Friday and Saturday. It came back on early Sunday morning. Two tree limbs fell in the yard.

I am so sorry. Mother nature is so mercurial especially in this day and age The Southwest part of this state got it bad too Not so much in this area. Someone just posted on FB though that Food Lion wasn't able to get a truck in due to the flooding so the store doesn't have a lot of stock.

Dena, this is all so heartbreaking. I'm thankful you all are as well as you are. We're close to the coast and get hurricanes, but who would have ever thought the Ashville area would get one. Prayers for everyone affected so tragically.

Glad you are okay. I live about 100 miles from where it came ashore. We were worried it would hit here. We had things ready to pack in the truck and go. I kept everything packed up as there is Another disturbance coming up into the Gulf last time I looked. Hurricanes are bad enough down here, but up there where there are mountains is just unbelievable. I have watched several videos of mudslides. A whole town destroyed. It is so sad. I pray every night for all victims of Helene. I thought our county here in florida was hit hard with Michael, but it wasn't Near the destruction I have seen with this hurricane.
