This is another one of those songs that emphasize the “pop” of the Hot 100 (instead of calling this just “rock”). Definitely not “rock” but part of the early rock era…which means they had no idea where to put it on the charts. Here we go! Old folks, sing along!
Honeycomb - Jimmie Rodgers
In this era I don’t have to say “NOT the ‘Father of Country Music’ Jimmie Rodgers,” because most people don’t know either of them.
1957 was a great time for music: if it was good, it was everywhere. As I mentioned, this song was charted all over the place. It was #1 on both the pop and the R&B charts, and top ten on the country charts. Where exactly does it fit? Who cares!!
This was written by the great Bob Merrill, who wrote the songs in the plays Carnival!, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and Funny Girl. He also wrote “How Much is That Doggie in the Window.”
This is one of those “innocent era” love songs, talking about how GREAT the girl is. Innocent, but wow, it’s still great.
Honeycomb
Written by Bob Merrill
Recorded by Jimmie Rodgers
From Jimmie Rodgers, 1957
Peak chart position: #1 (also charted #7 country)
Today’s country song: “Eleven Roses”

I like the song but always think of it as more country than pop... rockabilly maybe. And I must say, that's quite a smoldering look on him...

---------It sounds rockabilly to me, too. Elvis could have done this one in a movie.

How about that! Yes, it was in that “tweener” type of music.

I'm old enough to remember and appreciate this one. Have a good day.

Whew! I was worried this one might be “too country” for you.

The “innocent era” was before my time. I like the song and would have loved to have been a backing singer back then. For some strange reason I love when they repeat the words of the main singer.

Nothing strange about it. “They” can’t explain why music does what it does to individuals. (For the record, it was before my time, too….)

I just recently heard this one somewhere and I was considering making it The Cosmic Anthem Song Of The Month Club Song but I couldn't come up with anything to go with it.

Today would be good to celebrate apples and honey for Rose Hashanah….

@FourWalls That would be very good. Especially if the apples came in the form of a deep-dish pie.

You’re absolutely correct. This cannot be compared to people like Dylan, Kristofferson, or Prine. It wasn’t intended to be. And I will say, with the hindsight of working on a list like this for over a year, it is difficult to listen to the song in a vacuum and NOT with all of the other songs (by that artist, or that year, or ever) banging around in your head.
