I got in some more serious people watching today and helped a lady go to the toilet, though that hasn’t come out quite like it sounded in my head. We were both wandering around the inner sanctum of a very clean but labyrinthine cafe in Aegina looking for the toilets. We kept passing each other and smiled at each other till I discovered the ladies facility and pointed it out to her and in she went. Talking of toilets, I happened across another such heaven-sent facility today in yet another cafe which made me take note. Its sign wasn’t very polite, but at least it was pertinent and unambiguous. Often the lavatory is referred to in public places by curious and misleading euphemisms such as ‘rest room’ or ‘powder room’. This facility had a notice on the door which read “Sh!t Happens”. But there were ample possibilities for people watching today: two elderly English ladies sitting on a fallen marble column waiting for a bus, and discussing athletics for starters, each wearing a blue floaty dress but not both the same. There was a young Spanish couple who mistook us for Spanish and started a conversation with us. She was a little bit pregnant. Most interesting was a moody though efficient young waiter. He looked as though I knew him from somewhere and I kept looking as he shimmied among tables with physical grace and a melancholic attitude. I only realised who he reminded me of when he came to our table - a young Eros Ramazzotti. Oh the people one meets while travelling.
