Is success a result of being lucky or is because of hard work?

Hard work is what we are told is the foundation of success. It is the combination of dedication, persistence and effort over a period of time. Many people have achieved success after persistent efforts.
I graduated as an engineering student. I did put efforts in college and hence ended up with a job once out of college. There are few who did not fare well in the grades compared to mine. As I look back after the college time, today these few who did not fare well are doing relatively well in professional and financially better than me. Looking at them , I feel luck undeniably plays a big role when it comes to success. They could seize the right opportunity at right times , whereas even with persistent efforts , the open doors of success has not opened for me. Do not get me wrong, I am happy for them but then when I look at myself , I feel I have not reached where I should be in life and still struggling financially.
So do you believe success a result of being lucky or is because of hard work?

There is no doubt that luck plays a role in success as do connections..but you can't rely on either.

@TheHorse as long as the law doesn't come in, or is enforced, women will move on their backs. It is easier. When a women is appointed men get angry until you tell them...'she's big man's slam' and they calm and get nice. cause she's not a threat, she didn;t cut off his balls by getting that promotion.
Sure some women make it on their own, but rare and much harder

I don't believe in "Lucky", I believe in hardwork and effort.
And I believe on picking the right opportunity that is being thrown to us.
We have our own time + opportunity the important is what we do while we are in waiting stage of our lives. Some people have their opportunity while they are young, some get their own success at 4O and some at their 5O. I don't believe in luck, I always believe on god-given time and opportunity.

Life doesn’t always follow a straightforward formula that hard work is followed by success.
But by staying persistent, being open to opportunities, and being kind to yourself during setbacks, you'll increase your chances of finding your version of success—whether it comes to luck, hard work, or both.

I am now retired after over forty years of working life in a few countries.
I opted for balance in life - working and personal.
I am contented though I would have been better off financially if that was my goal.
I worked hard and took those chances that caught my fancy.
Who we meet matters most according to me.

Having the right connections and knowing how to deal with all sorts of people may contribute to one's success. Like you, I graduated with stellar grades and I'm skilled in the technical aspects of my career. But I'm that introverted worker who wouldn't join officemates for lunch or try to please the boss or the client. So, I never got to climb the corporate ladder.
As for finances, I would think I've worked hard enough in the past to earn me decent income and set aside a bit of money as savings. I thrived as a freelance worker for many years -- ghostwriting for offshore clients and earning in $. I preferred non-voice work and communicated mostly through email.
I hope you find the right opportunities that can improve your finances. I believe your hard work and efforts will eventually pay off.

@RevivedWarrior All the best to you. It's nice that technology now gives us more ways to work and earn according to our preferences. If the AI hadn't taken over many of my writing jobs, I'd still be writing content for websites and newsletters. These days, myLot is the only thing that gives a few cents.

You need both.Behind a success there is 99% of your hard work and just 1% of your luck. But if that 1% is not with you;the 99% of your lab our goes futile.
