Dancing the night away - or maybe just listening

Last Friday, we went to the clubhouse for ‘Happy Hour’ as it is sometimes called, although it lasts much more than an hour. Most order fish and chips or pizza. These two shops are next to each other about ten minutes away. A couple of people put in the orders for everyone at about 4pm then, around 6pm, several others will pick up all the orders and bring them back to the clubhouse. Everyone takes their own drinks. That’s the backstory. Two of our residents are from Trinidad and on Friday, nine of the friends, all from Trinidad, entertained us playing steel pan drums, percussion and bongo drums to backing tapes. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed listening to them and a lot got up and danced. I’ll write a bit about the actual instruments next time. I found it all quite fascinating. The photo is Vince’s, shared with permission.

Yes, every Friday at least a few gather to socialise. We might play a few games but sometimes just eat together and chat.

They play whenever and wherever they're asked to and don't charge. I thought they were just great. Such a great rhythm to that type of music.

How did they get from Trinidad to Australia, and why?

One day I'll ask the lady that lives here but I don't know. Most spent their childhoods in Trinidad so maybe there were better work opportunities here. And I can understand if one of a family moves and does well, they'd be encouraging their friends and relatives to join them.

That surprises me a bit but, after watching Antiques Roadshow, I know a lot came over to work in various factories.

They were happy to play for nothing. One of the villagers has booked them to play at her Probus group and they are not charging.
