In my younger days handkerchiefs were part of the attire we wore and I saw to it that they were displayed Every outufit had a matching handkerchief. When gifting handkerchiefs one had to also put a coin along with it as there was a superstition just gifting handkerkchiefs would ruin a friendship. I do not use them any more but instead I carry facial tissues or may be just a paper handkerchief. What is strange is that they are still being sold and this image is from the Site Amazon in.

We used to have handkerchieves when I was a child. Now everybody uses tissues as they are much more convenient.

I carried a handkerchief every day until in my mid-20's. Now, I just put one in my bag if I happen to find one in the drawers. I prefer to use them when I have allergies or a cold. I have my girls bring a hanky to school when they're sneezing. You are right - handkerchiefs were part of an attire a long time ago. I have a picture of me in first grade with a hanky pinned on my uniform.

For cold we have the tissues these days. In those days I do not think anyone stepped out without a kerchief!

I had some cute ones when I was a kid. I no longer have them. I use tissue now with lotion.

@allknowing No, I see more men's hankies on the store shelves than any for women.

Also in Italy we put a coin when we gifted handkerchiefs, because the superstition said that they could bring tears. I still use them, I only use paper handkerchiefs if I have a cold. All that paper also pollute the planet.

But there is no going back to handkerchiefs as tissue seems more convenient.

@LadyDuck That is one way to discourage going for things that add to pollution. Wish other countries followed that norm.

@allknowing - I have a drawer full of handkerchiefs, so I use them. It takes not time to wash. I use tissues only if I have a cold. As tissues pollute, the price is getting very high here, the authorities are taxing everything that is a cause of dangerous pollution and hars aquatic ecosystem.

In my country, when we give handkerchief, it means that you will cause sorrow to the recipient

A few years ago I returned to the old handkerchiefs. The papers tissues were terrible for my nose allergies. Fortunatly I had kept my late father´s old handkerchiefs as a sign of love. Now I´m using them.

Hahahaha true! And there are famous brands. and its kinda expensive before that is why when I gift it for someone I usually buy one, lol! They are still on the market, but in a cheaper price you can buy a lot. And I still believe that its usable and handy, except when you have runny nose it is better to have tissue in your bag.

I used that before in my younger years when I have not discovered tissue paper. I still have my handkerchiefs though in the bedroom cupboard.

I still carry one though I might not use it. It's just out of the habit. I will have two in my purse all the time, one thin cotton one and one with thick towel kind. I ask my daughters too to carry it..you never know that they might be needed some time.

Yes, most people use paper tissues now. But my cousin insists on using handkerchiefs. He has been using handkerchiefs for decades.

My grandfathers still use them, along with paper tissues. Even my parents, who are almost 60, only use paper tissues. I wonder if they're still being sold because it's some sort of environmentally friendlier choice than disposable paper tissues, the way washable sanitary pads are also sold.
