Trying the wooden spoon across boiling water trick

I am boiling some eggs this morning. I am going to try the trick I always forget about which is lying a wooden spoon over the top of the pot to prevent boil overs. I think this really works. However, I rarely have anything that boils over including eggs..when the boiling gets going I always turn it down..however, I have had an egg boil over a time or two, plus maybe some potatoes..so I brought out the spoon just in case. Do you use the wooden spoon to prevent boil overs?

I used to do this. Then one day the handle of my wooden spoon scorched. I didn’t have the burner turned up or anything, but after that, I gave it up.

I am not sure I have done it before, no more than once or twice, but I remember my mother used to do it.

I can't remember anyone in my family doing that, but I do remember cooking at a very young age, so if they did that, I think I would have remembered.

I've heard of that trick but have never tried it. Did it work?

I guess so, but when they started boiling I turned them down. a bit.so wasn't really needed. I wasn't going to encourage a boil over, just to see if it would work..

I’ve not heard about the wooden spoon trick, but I can tell you another that not only stops the pan boiling over, but also saves you money. When you cook the eggs, they don’t need to be continuously boiled, so bring the water to the boil, put a lid on and turn the heat off. The eggs wil continue to cook in the hot water until you take them out. So then you just set a timer for how you like them. e.g. 3 or 4 mins for soft boiled up to 8 or 9 mins for hard boiled. The times will vary depending on size of eggs.

@snowy22315 Try it. If you eat lots of boiled eggs, imagine the energy saving you’ll make over time.
Another way to cook them is in a steamer. If you are boiling something like potatoes, you can stick the eggs ina steamer over the top and cook them for the same time as above. It is also meant to be easier to peel the eggs after steaming, but I’ve had variable results with this. Plus, I don’t eat enough boiled eggs this way to remember if it worked.
Just remember that in France, one egg is un oeuf. (enough).

I'm not saying it might not work for someone, but I tried it once and it didn't work.

My mother used to do it with pudding, but there is a scientific explanation behind it.

I usually do too, but I have had a boil over or two...It is generally eggs or potatoes that are the culprits.

By all means try it, but use a real wooden spoon, not just any large spoon.
