Luxury means cakes.

Last week Anita did not come to work as I told you. I worked more although I did not do all her work. But I felt that I had saved her wages so today I made a small list of grocery luxuries and together with a couple of things I really needed I bought them. I did not have the kind of bread that I most liked so I asked for it along with butter as I had just a tiny bit of it. I often cook with butter so I have to have it. The butter was on sale if you bought more so I did. I also bought some ham (it was also on sale) and some chicken livers. Chicken livers are always inexpensive and I love them. So today I´ll marinate some withcrushed garlic and will fry them in butter. And while they are frying, I´ll mash some potatoes to go with them. But my late breakfast today is being the best. I bought a chocolate cake (I already ate a piece) and in a while I´ll have my 3rd cup of coffee with a delicious ham sandwich. I did not buy the meringue lucuma cream cake because that has to be placed in the freezer and I will not eat much of it before Monday as I´m going to Dixie´s. The chocolate cake, on the other hand, can be place in the fridge and it lasts a long time as it does not have cream. I am saving a lot in clothes and bills. So my only real expense is groceries and medicines. I think that if at my age I must spend more in doctors and pills, it is perfectly fair that I also spend on eating well. What are the expenses that you consider luxuries?

I understand very well, we are doing the same, our only real expense is grocery and medicines for my husband.

I look at my wardrobe and have some clothes that are over 10 years old. They don´t look outdated because I have never dressed what is "in" except MANY decades ago at the time of the mini skirts.

@marguicha I still have sweaters that are 40 and still good so I wear them. I wore mini skirts in the 70s.

@marguicha I tried mini skirts and also short shorts. I was uncomfortable wearing them and did not look good in them either. That era did not last long for me.

Butter is something I feel is a staple. I do not care for margarine at all and do not want to buy it if I can get butter. Our butter has climbed in price, it's rarely, if ever, on sale. I am glad you got your cake, I know you enjoy it so much. Luxuries here, at least in the area I live in, seem to be any form of red meat--but chicken is pricier than it was, supposedly due to the Avian flu thing. Here, pork is the most affordable meat, anything else, it's best to hope you get lucky and find a sale.

Where I live chicken is more expensive than before but still less expensive by far than red meat. I am eating less red meat not because of the price but because I feel better eating less of it. I love pork but I don´t eat it often. I tried once margarine decades ago and said NO. I don´t mind the price of butter because it is a staple. But today I found out that if you bought more the price was less. So I bought it For me, luxury has to do with what I like best. Today I ate some very inexpensive chicken livers with mashed potatoes and was perfectly happy. I don´t find them often.

@marguicha I do like chicken livers a lot. Unfortunately, I am the only one who does, so it's not often that I have them.

I think you are fair in eating well. For me, Coffee at INR 200 plus for more than once a month or eating out too often on Mid priced restaurants is a luxury, even though I have Credit Cards. One has to be disciplined with cards else it means putting more important expenses on back burner later on.

@akalinus I use my credit card a lot as I don´t like to carry cash with me. But I pay it every month.

@akalinus I have only once used my credit card as a credit card (paying in monthly installments) in several months was when I had to pay the hospital bill.

My credit card is for emergencies or urgent needs only. I am paying a bill I ran up for my son's car.It had a bunch of things wrong with it that needed fixing.

I used to like eating out a lot. But, I don't do that much even when I have the money. You never know if the food is safe and the employees are healthy. The prices are humungous and they expect a 25% tip. Better to buy a cake and eat it at home.

I now only eat out when someone invites me. I don´t have the money to eat out and I only like to eat at good restaurants.

@akalinus The last time I was happy at those restaurants was over 30 years ago. We visited the US with my husband and went to those places where they serve lots of pancakes and some incredible breakfasts. I don´t even remember the name. I only remember that they also served the worst coffee I´d ever had.

@marguicha That is good. The cheap restaurants are unafe here anymore. A famous one is making people sick with eColi. It is worth eating at a better place or just cooking at home.

Cakes also mean luxuries to me. Also dark chocolates. I usually have Lindt's 97% dark chocolate. I just discovered Venchi's 80% dark chocolate. So yummy! But Venchi is expensive.

Luxuries are cakes and meat such as corned beef and prosciutto. Also keeping as cool or as warm as I want. I could really go for a slice of cake and a corned beef or prosciutto sandwich. Have a good day.

These last winters I have spent more on heating but figure that if my house is warm. I´ll spend less on doctors and meds.
