A stone fence

I have heard Americans talk about stone fences, for example when describing the countryside of Yorkshire which is well known for its miles of dry-stone walls, so I understood the term ‘stone fence’ to be American for ‘wall’. But when I saw this field boundary a few days ago it was something new for me (although it obviously isn’t new at all to the locals in that area!) It’s clearly not a wall but a fence made from thin stone slabs set upright and supported by an iron rail. Have you seen this type of boundary before? No, I haven't seen one like that, but when I was a teenager the property behind ours was made of limestone chunks and mortar.

@fleura No, and it doesn’t look all that stable. We have miles of dry stone walls all over the countryside too. Great places for hares on our west coast.

I've seen fences like this in Australia and small sheep-yards too made from stone slabs. Here is a post I wrote about it in 2020, describing how the slabs of rock were created by making a fire on a outcrop, letting it heat then throwing water on it, causing slabs to break off. This is the link if you're interested. I hope I'm allowed to add it here. https://www.mylot.com/post/3408530/creating-rock-slabs-with-heat-and-water
