10/30/24 - Update On My Husband

Got a hold of my husband yesterday. He is not happy in this new facility and feels it's worse than the last one. The food is terrible and he's not getting the care that he's had in the past.
Physical therapy is wearing him out. I'm sure at 83 he'd rather sit and watch TV. I really feel sorry for him; but he wants to come home; so he'll have to power through..
Thank you for your continued prayers, support and thoughts.

I am not sure I know how all of the PT thing works for a long stay. I thought when the other place said he had advanced as far as he could with PT, that he wouldn't have any more, or benefit from any more? I am not meaning to sound dumb, I was just surprised he could still get PT, even in a different facility.
So, if you put him back in the 'old' facility, they would not give him PT anymore, right? Does he know that? I suppose you could set up your home with what all he needs to function, but as you have stated, you would have to have 24/7 help--I don't know if that would exceed what you are paying now for his stay in the place he is in, but I do know how hard it is to find enough help for 24/7--I had to arrange for 2 family members to have it, and it's amazing how some of them just call in sick, are late, or don't show up at all. I hope you can get it worked out for him somehow, so he is happier.

@Treborika
Some people in the nursing homes here have no family left, they have outlived everyone. It's really sad when that happens.

I have realized that family members hardly show up to visit or nurse their ailing members.

I,m sorry about this. Can you meet with the staff and state your concerns? I thought you supposed to let them know what your expectations were.It seems as though they thunk he will not improve.

@LindaOHio If it could be done, house with a complete care would be wonderful if your health insurance can give it.

You are right, he needs to power through.
What are they doing here at this facility that wasn't done at the previous place for pt? I hope that it is strength building for day to day activities of life so that he can realize his dream and move back home again.

@LindaOHio And if he came home he would want ice all the time and pop, would he be able to get it himself? Would he do okay in a wheel chair?

He wants ice all the time and a can of pop, he needs to be cleaned up, etc. I don't know if he's pressing his call button or not. He needs to push it to get someone to help him.

@LindaOHio If he prefers to go back there I think he would be happier. I fear that he will not have PT anymore there, as they said they already did everything they could do.

If they took him back he would be in the long term section, I’m sure, since they basically sort of booted him from the rehab part, I think?

They are giving him PT and the other place might not. But you could ask them about that and maybe get him moved. But I don't think it's going to make a lot of difference. I know you both want him home but without live in help I don't think he can.

What a bummer. I feel so bad for him. My thoughts are certainly with him, especially after reading Marie's response.

@celticeagle He was a little overweight, he could walk, he could drive. Now he looks like a frail, very old man. He's lost about 70 pounds.

After 8 months it is time to be realistic about the situation. He isn’t improving and you’ve unfortunately seen that he can’t go home without some major live-in assistance. It is of course understandable that he wants to be home. He can’t though.

@LindaOHio Does he have access to a social worker or counselor at this new place? After all of this time he has to be frustrated and likely is depressed. It is probably a good idea to have him talking to someone and eventually considering the possibility of long term care in the future.

@NJChicaa There is a social worker at every facility. I still don't get how he can walk with a walker for 100 feet, he comes home and then he falls after walking 2 feet.

@LindaOHio Do you ave Applebees there? Or however it's spelled? Their steaks are smallish, but really good!

@TheHorse Our Applebee's really sucks. We tried it several times. Longhorn Steakhouse makes a good steak.
