Is loyalty a value or threat to one’s progress?

Loyalty is a noble trait that fosters trust and commitment in relationships. A sense of belonging and strengthening of bonds is possible mostly through loyalty alone.
However, I see today I see loyalty has challenges especially in corporates. There are few if not many who are blindly loyal to the epartment/organization/institution they work for. They find more pride in working 10-15 years for a company (They perhaps have only the same as the accomplishment to speak about). They fail to recognize new opportunities or adapt to changing world. They get limited to openness to learning and new idea. Worse, when these companies lay off these loyal people are first in line to be fired.
Loyalty is great in building trust but it should be obstructing our progress. We should always self-reflect and move around. So, do you see loyalty as a value or threat to one’s progress?

@RevivedWarrior there is a saying to never bite the hand that feeds you and if that hand by chance doesn't bully, it makes sense not biting her

We should have self-awareness of what we need. We can repricoate helps received but does not mean loyalty. Thanks for sharing!

Definitely -our aspirations comes first and not the organization. When a company has challenges, they may not always think about us or for that matter loyalty! Thanks for sharing!

I think it can be a two edged sword.
Or in simpler terms, it is good but when exercised within limits.
I too have been with an Organization for 15 plus years.
And frankly, it is not always due to loyalty or love for company.
There are multiple factors. At times, it is due to being in a very niche skill set.
But yes, one needs to think in broader terms and take a decision that suits one's current and future interest.
In Post Modern world, Loyalty is not as valued an attribute as it was say 25 to 30 years back.

Absolutely , I do not see much corporates appreciating about loyalty. Even if they speak about loyalty , it is sugar coated as the relationship has benefits for both organization and individual. Thanks for sharing!

Now a days, the top management indulges in a lot of double speak.
In person they claim to be employee friendly but often their moves reflect another intention.
I on the other hand think that openness, transparency and frankness is better, even if that means biting a few bitter pills.
(proverbial usage) !

Loyalty at the cost of one's own progress needs rethinking. After all charity begins at home.

I think for that, your loyalty should go first in yourself and your family, first and foremost when you get sick and the company thinks you are no longer valuable to them they can easily kick you and replace you, and people sometimes die because of work, and your company can never replace you nor help your family all throughout of their lives.
It is okay to be loyal and honest with your job, but never ever exchange your growth and future for a company who never thinks of your welfare and your family's future. That is so bad!

You are right- Our first loyalty should be to us and family. Other royalties are subject to conditions. Thanks for sharing!

Loyalty is a two-way street. In business that is not always the case, so one must tread carefully. In life loyalty is a great trait to have, but there are instances where blind loyalty can cloud one's judgement to the point of making a bad decision.

i believe that loyalty can be a threat to one's progress. but still - i think we should first discuss our options with our manager and let him know about our expectations. and if we can't agree on it - then leave and go somewhere where our work will be more appreciated
