Cause, Gladiator doesn't need a part 2. I now get it how Rusell Crowe must have felt when he was asked about the sequel.
If the first and, for me, the only movie told it all, the story was completed and if main actor died (sorry for spoiler), which he did, i don't want to bother myself and being a part of this franchise. On the other hand, I am glad the new movies are opening their doors to new actors but why not completely new movies, fresh ones, not only sequels.
So, Gladiator is a 2000 movie, nice year, directed by Ridley Scott and which starrs Russel Crowe, not that known to the Hollywood crowds back then.
It is a story of a soldier, rather general who, in conspiracy that did others around him, was falsely accused he killed the Roman emperor. True emperors were mentioned in the movie but historians are saying the years were mixed. Well, we can't satisfy them all.
Russel's character, Maximus, was almost executed when he was accused and captured but he ran to his home town in back then's Spain. He unfortunately comes too late and finds his property burned and his wife and a boy hang. That scene when he comes to his knees and weeps, trust me, i cried too.
From then, he is captured by a slave owner who trains him to be a gladiator. Maximus becomes respected among gladiators and soon, they come to Rome. On the throne is no longer Marcus Aurelius, it's his son, Commodus, also his father's killer, which Maximus knew and suspected him.
Maximus wins every fight he can and when there was the right moment, he tells Commodus who he really is, in front of the whole crowd in arena. That brings fear to Commodus's luxiouros life he led this far and as a tyrant, he becomes even worse cause, he is afraid that Maximus will take his power.
And he is right, Maximus, our gladiator, wants a state of Rome to be true to its name again, with less corruption and games, just like it was with an older emperor. Late Richard Harris acted as an old Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius.
Since then, with his own army that only emperor has, pretorians, Commodus starts killing members of Senat or imprisoning them. He even starts threatening his own sister, who was in love with Maximus in younger years that if she helps Maximus, he will murder her son. She is a widow and, he also starts incestuous relationship with her, yuck, i know. Joaquin Phoenix really deserved to win Oscar for this supporting role.
The end of the movie is sad and tragic. Just before the last battle, being chained, Maximus has been stabbed several times and should continue fighting with, guess who, with an emperor, who also stabbed him. When his battle starts, he's already injured but he did try to get a few shots on Commodus who cheated the whole time. At last, he kills Commodus but due to fatal stabbing injuries, saying last words about Rome being great again, he falls, dies and meets his family in Elysium.
Elysium or Elysium Fields is an after life image that old Romans had and they hoped to go there after their death. This heaven had golden fields of wheat, some food perhaps, wine certainly but mostly golden fields where everyone will walk through them. Simply image yet a powerful one.
Therefore, Maximus got his wish come true. All this time, he was fighting to revenge his family but to restore the old order of the state as well. He didn't want to be a politican, just a soldier who wanted to spend his time with his family and he met them but in other way.
And this song that i copied, it is not a real language. Musician who sings it, she made it up yet, it summarises the whole movie, i feel and so many emotions. Epic movie, i say and i recommend it.
Enjoy your day or Halloween.
P.s. don't worry, the movie is not black and white

Gladiator is one my favorite movies. I don't see the need for a part 2. My husband says the movie isn't good enough.

@grenery8 ha-ha you are so good at remembering lines. i have watched gladiator several times but could not recite a single line. i love HP and LOTR movies too. I can watch "The Two Towers" over and over. (I used to reread the book too at least once a year, when life allowed me to do so. LOL).
come to think of it, i think i haven't watched a full movie in a long time. that's because i've been so hooked on korean drama series.

@grenery8 I only remember that there were some parts that I found too violent. On the whole, I don´t think I found it worthwhile.
