I made my own 'hat'

Yesterday we attended a Melbourne Cup luncheon in the clubhouse. The Melbourne Cup is Australia's premier horse race and the state of Victoria even has a public holiday on the first Tuesday in November when the race is run.
The fashions at the Cup itself seem to be more important than the horses and our ‘village people’ got into the swing of things with hats/fascinators and nice clothes.
Fascinators (small fancy hats) are sold quite cheaply in one of our stores but I made my own headpiece by putting real roses from my garden onto a headband. That’s me in the middle with our good friends either side. I’ll put up a better photo soon of the blow-up horse in the background.

I love your hat! It's the best one there I bet!
Thank you for explaining what a fascinator is. I just read the term in one of the books I am reading. the book starts off in England then moves to Scotland and the characters discussed a fascinator and i had no idea what they were
Would the Melbourne Cup be equivalent to the Kentucky Derby of the US? when a video of the Kentucky Derby shows clips of the video on the TV all the women wear hats
that sounds like you had such a fun time!

Yes, the Melbourne Cup would be the equivalent of the Kentucky Derby. Until two years ago I didn't know what a fascinator was either! I'd never heard of it.

Thanks. I didn't really want to buy something but at least I participated. Our social committee goes to a lot of trouble so we like to support them if we can, even just by wearing a hat!

Thanks. It was lucky I had enough roses to make the headpiece.

The headpiece radiates freshness and bliss maybe because you made them from your own garden roses!

@JudyEv The color is unique. Its somewhere between crimson and pink with white patches in the centre. Honestly, had you not mentioned before in the post,I wouldn't have thought they were roses. I haven't seen such unique roses.

That looks nice. I had heard about Melbourne Cup though I searched more on same after reading this discussion. It has a rich history . I was not also aware Victoria state gives a publich holiday to celebrate the race. Thats very unique. Not heard of other regions or places giving holiday or importance to horses or horse race.Atleast I am not aware and well interesting to note on the fashion part. Guess the fashion makes another attraction to Melbourne Cup apart from the Horses and the records. Guess you had a great time with your friends.Have a great day ahead!

Quite innovative I must say and it looks pretty too. It is more of a crown than a hat
