Gift tags coming out my ears

The photo has nothing to do with the post. It’s our national floral emblem – the wattle. I wrote in a response earlier today that I had gift tags ‘coming out my ears’. What a strange idiom this is. In case English isn’t your first language, it means that you have an over-abundance of something. In my case, I have enough gift tags for many, many Christmas’s. I tried to research the phrase but couldn’t find out how it might have originated. Perhaps someone else will have better luck.

@judyev I suppose the saying creates a prettier image that if it was (as it might well have been) coming out of one’s rear.

After the holiday sale, I had candles coming out of my ears. Is this sentence good? This is the first time I have encountered that idiom

Yes, that's pretty much how you'd use it.

I can relate, they seem to sell them in the gross and that is how I have so many, probably more than I have use for ever in this lifetime. Your national flower is pretty.

@JudyEv I ordered pretty gold labels when we moved into our home in the country. Even after over 20 years of living there and actually sending a decent amount of mail, which we no longer do, I had sheets and sheets of labels when we moved. I'll never order them again for the amount of mail that I send out it is wasteful.

@JudyEv Yes that is very true. My hubs does consultant health and safety training, and his cards are old, but his email and phone number are still current on them. Most of his clients are long time and already have them in their contacts.

@Juliaacv We now have a surplus of business cards too. They are cheaper to buy if you order a certain number but now they have the wrong address on them and our Website cards about the photography will no longer be useful as we will be closing the site. However, I'm using business cards to write my grocery orders. They will still last a very long time.

The Italian custom since Women's Day 1946 is to celebrate the women on March 8 with a sprig of golden wattle (Mimosa). I like those branches. We use the same idioms in Italy ‘coming out my ears'.

@JudyEv - It is very possible. There is a place in the South of France called "Bormes les Mimosas" where the golden wattle trees are so many that you can feel the smell in the air even driving on the close highway. It's a very pretty small town.

@LadyDuck Our red flowering gum was introduced into California and I think it is now a pest over there.

I think you've mentioned that before. Italy has much the same climate as much of Australia so we probably have some of the same vegetation.

I knew the wattle was the national emblem, but only because of Monty Python and their Bruce sketch!

I have enough gift bags and wrapping paper to last another 20 years or more. I won't live that long! Have a good weekend.

I thought wattles were those hanging fleshy things under birds' and old peoples' chins...

Me, too! It's one of those things that charities like to send, unasked for, to try to get me to donate. I donate the gift tags, lol
