Remembering a World War I soldier

It’s Remembrance Day in Western Australia and shortly we’re heading to Brunswick Junction to a service which will commemorate the 28 young men from that region who lost their lives during the 1914-1918 war. Vince’s great uncle was one of them. He was in a field hospital in France when a bomb hit the hospital and his body was never found. We found his name on the Australian National War Memorial at Villiers-Bretonneaux in France. Thirty-two thousand young people enlisted from our state representing almost 10% of Australia’s population at the time. Brunswick Junction is a small town and was probably smaller then with dairying being the main occupation. To lose so many of its youth would have been devastating and yet the same pattern occurred in a great many rural areas.

sounds like a meaningful Remembrance Day service especially with Vince’s great-uncle being one of them

It's just very sad that there is still so much conflict still in the world.

I am not sure I knew Australians were involved in WWI. I think of it primarily as a European war with large American involvement

Because we were even more closely aligned to Britain at that time, and the young men saw it as a great adventure, they flocked to sign up. Our population at the time was 4.9 million and 416,809 Aussies signed up which was 38.7% of the male population aged 18 to 44 so we had a significant presence.

I am sorry for the loss of Vince's family member. The freedom that we enjoy has been hard fought for, and we all need to remember that and stop and pay homage to those that paid the ultimate price.

Communications were so much slower then. Families would have waited weeks, months, to get news from those on the front.

Wars are terrible for all concerned. Things aren't much better now for those involved in current wars.

Isn’t that just horrible they were already wounded and they were targeted to make sure they were all finished off.

It is horrible. So much was horrible in the trench type of warfare.

There seems to be nothing but wars at the moment, especially in the middle east.

I doubt we'll ever see an end to war. Men are too greedy and unable to compromise or negotiate with others.

You introduced me to the music of Eric Bogle, and his song “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda” is so poignant and fitting for today.

He has done a couple more about the futility of war. The best known one would be No Man's Land aka Green Fields of France.

We also celebrate Remembrance Day here in Europe today, it's to remember the 1918 Armistice. One of the brother of my grandmother was killed in WWI.

I'm glad we went. They had a good crowd there which was nice as they'd gone to a lot of trouble.

I'm sorry for Vince's loss. Today is Veterans Day in the US. We honor those that have served in the military. Memorial Day is when we honor those that have given their lives.

It's good that these men and women are remembered. Even those who returned were almost always damaged in some way.
