Question: Is it improper for people to check their phones while eating?

I am guilty of doing this every mealtime. One of the reasons is that I am always late to eat at home. As a parenting concern, I randomly advised my niece not to do this. I cannot help but hold back because I also do the same thing. She needs to bear in mind that there is always a limitation for screentime. If all of us are at the dinner table, we need to put the cell phones aside and enjoy being together. Are you like me? What do you think, guys? Image Credit: images.squarespace-cdn.com

I just feel annoyed when people can't get away from their phones even when eating and chatting with other people in front of them. Yes, I think it's rude.

You have a point. I am with someone and want to talk with him or her up close. If this person keeps on using his or her mobile phone, I will surely be annoyed. If this happpens, I will stop talking. It is better to focus on my meal and take off after doing so.

@astutimeliana723 Speaking of such a situation, I will rather stay away from them as much as possible. Then, there will be no next time meet up.

@Shavkat Agreed, if that happened to me, I would do the same thing. Because they have bad manners, I can't hang out with people like that.

No phones are allowed at the table when we're all eating together. Some of my friends do this when we are out . . . they are grown and I'm not going to control them - but I sure won't appreciate them pulling out their phones.

@much2say You are so right. I cannot hangout with this kind of people. It is best not to meet them up for the next time.

I agree with you. I also think that it is a bad sign for those who are couples. If a partner keeps on checking the phone while talking with him or her. Some claimed that this particular person is showing his or her falling out of love.

i believe that using your phone while you’re eating with someone - is rude towards them. but when you’re eating by yourself - it’s fine. but it’s better to be conscious of eating, rather than be focused on your phone and not even registering the food you’re putting in.

Indeed. It will a bad act if doing it while attending to someone. Since I am alone, it is acceptable because I usually check emails and the like while munching my dishes.

@Shavkat None of my adult children allow my grands to have phones at the table. They say that's family time, not phone time.

I usually do not use my phone while eating as a group. But if I receive a call, I'll check who's calling in case there is something urgent I need to deal with.

Speaking of urgency or expecting a call, then I need to check it from time to time. If I am in a group, then I need to refrain myself of using it.

I always have my phone nearby in case of emergency, but I'm not glued to it like a lot of today's generation are. If I'm out in public, I'll typically have a pair of earbuds in, just so that I have my hands free when I'm out and about. In a few rare cases, this occours during meals. But, I am not checking notifications. I'll get an alert on my watch or phone, and I can tell by the sound if I need to check it or it can wait. More important notifications come through my earbuds in the form of spoken content. Now, with Ios 18, I don't have to limit it to just my earbuds. Now those notifications come through my speaker.

It is nice to have earbuds to be notified. During the daytime, I usually play with a new app that I have been busying with. It is possible to do livestreaming, but I never use it when eating. Unlike some livestreamers, they are so comfortable doing it. I cannot force myself in such a situation.

I think, yes. They also say that it also have bad effect for digestion. And I think meal time is for family and yourself, taking a break from stress and focus on the fam...catching up or just relax your mind and body and just eat peacefully.

@Shavkat sorry for that. Make sure you finish your food before watching, they say it affects your digestion. Don't what to say about your mom, have you pray about it? One of our pastor lost her wife during covid and ask God what to do, because he is no yet ready that time, and God answered him, somehow God made him ready able to get by. I really don't know, its you and God. Sorry I dont know what to say... But surely God has the answer.

@luisadannointed Actually, I am a fast eater. Watching something on YouTube will make me slower. No worries. I just remembered them at random. I accepted the fact that she is not here anymore. It is a matter of remembering the motherly love she had showed to us before.

I agree. It was like in the past wherein mobile phone was not popular. We need to be with the family and eat meals served on the table together. If I am the last one to eat dinner, I used to talk with my mother. Since she is not here anymore, I tend to watch some videos on YouTube while taking the time of consuming the food. I suddenly missed my mother.

Indeed. We can also notice this kind of behaviour if talking with our partners in life. When my ex-GF did this, I broke up with her. It is a sign that a partner is not interested with us anymore.

@Shavkat Or busy siblings. i mean, we are all busy at the end of the day so why others like to emphasize it, i wonder it is your decision but partners should be more interested and respectful

I do not bring my cellphone to dining table unless I am expecting an important call or message. However, I have seen with others as well as at times in my case, when we are bored or we are looking for entertainment , we reach out to our smartphones. The smartphones are our new tv or laptop. So , people like to check on the things. Also, people like to focus on the phones when the person or conversation is boring for them. So , if at meal time we talk about interesting things then perhaps the smartphone viewing would be less at least during meal time. Atleast it worked for few that I am aware of . Good luck!

You have a point. If I am with someone, I do not use my mobile phone. I need to be attentive with him or her. It would be great to have a small talk, instead of using my mobile phone. If I am solo, then it is best to entertain myself with my mobile phone. I love watching something while taking time to eat. At least, I will not be bored.
